Jerry Jones Calls Out Specific Position Group For “Poor Play” In Cowboys’ Week 8 Loss
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is known for his candid assessments, and following a humbling 44-24 loss to the Denver Broncos, he directed his frustration squarely at one position group: the linebackers.
The Cowboys’ defense has been a significant concern all season, ranking near the bottom of the league in both yards and points allowed. The loss to the Broncos was a breaking point for many, as Denver racked up 426 yards of total offense, including a punishing 179 yards on the ground.
Jerry Jones’ Criticism of Dallas Cowboys Linebackers
In his Tuesday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones didn’t mince words when diagnosing the primary issue with the run defense. He placed the blame directly on the play of his linebackers, calling for better execution from the heart of his defense.
“We need to basically have better play from the linebackers maintaining the integrity of our gaps, which the linebackers have to fill, the linebackers have to slide,” Jones stated. “So they did a good job against us, Denver, and we did a poor job.”
Execution Over Talent
Jones’ critique goes beyond a single bad game. He suggested that the team’s defensive issues are not something that can be fixed by simply acquiring one elite player. He believes the problems are more about execution than talent alone.
“Are we one player away on defense? I think we’re not,” Jones explained. “I think we’re more than that away, but what we’re closer to than it looks, in my mind, is executing better on defense.”
Looking Ahead to the Cardinals Matchup
The comments put the entire defensive unit, and specifically the linebacker corps, on notice. With the team sitting at 3-4-1, the pressure is mounting to fix the persistent defensive breakdowns. While Jones seemed to downplay the likelihood of a major trade, his public criticism signals that the status quo is unacceptable.
As the Cowboys prepare for a Monday night matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, all eyes will be on the defense to see if they can respond to their owner’s challenge. If the poor tackling and missed gap assignments continue, Jones may be forced to consider more drastic measures to salvage the season.
