Matt Crafton Doesn’t Hold Back on Currey After Charlotte Wreck
Drama and the Roval go hand in hand, so this Roval weekend, it was Crafton and Currey bringing the fireworks. After the race, the driver of the 88 had a heated confrontation with the driver of the 45, and afterward, Crafton called Bayley Currey an idiot. So that’s what happened; that’s what I found out!
Crafton vs. Currey at the Roval
Late in the race, Currey was trailing the No. 88 Menards truck on a charge, and he wasn’t waiting for old man Crafton to get out of the way. So, he drove down to the inside of the Ford truck in turn seven and ran right through the Thorsport truck, spinning it around. The caution flag didn’t fly either, causing the former, now retiring, 3-time truck champion to lose even more spots, which only caused him to be that much more furious.
So, over the radio, it’s not shocking that Crafton let it all out on the radio. Constantly swearing and yelling over the radio for the rest of the race! Even saying he wanted to put Currey in the safer barriers, “Make sure you tell (TJ Bell) … F**K YOU, YOU STUPID MOTHERF**KER,” Crafton said on the radio. With all the anger and vigor, the quote as written out implies.
And he spent the final laps of the race trying to catch up to the Niece Motorsports truck, but wasn’t fast enough to get back to it. Due to the damage he caused on lap 67. So, he couldn’t destroy equipment, which relegated him to the classic pit road confrontation. So, no punches were thrown; all it was was Crafton yelling at Currey, and him saying it back. “Sorry, I did not mean to do it,” Currey told Crafton.
Crafton and Currey’s Words After the Fact
After the race, Crafton was interviewed by Frontstretch. “45 drove over his head and took us out. I mean, he’s an idiot every week. I watched him race, and I passed him cleanly, leaving me 5 or 6 ahead of him. However, he drives into the corner and cleans you out. But then they don’t want to get out and fight like they should.
That’s the way it should be handled instead of running into each other’s stuff, and it’s just pathetic.” That’s what the veteran, who has been in the truck series since 2000, had to say. Currey, however, had nothing more to say, leaving at his “I didn’t mean it” comment on pit road.
But they weren’t even; it was only a beef between a consistency-based truck veteran and a young, promising truck driver. As Layne Riggs had his beef with Grant Enfinger, which shows a complete mirror to the Crafton and Currey beef. It was Riggs who was mad at Enfinger because he ran into him on lap 1. Riggs qualified 2nd for the event, way ahead of Crafton, but right in front of Grant Enfinger.
Riggs vs Enfinger
Entering turn 1, Enfinger tried to go for a gap in the middle that didn’t exist and spun Riggs into Heim. He damaged his own truck, but he inflicted significantly more damage and even sent Heim, who had started from the pole, into the barriers. That caused Layne Riggs to go on a Crafton-style radio rant of his own. Saying “Veterans Race Worse Than Anyone.”
Considering how much vets have been discussing the poor driving skills of younger drivers, it’s refreshing to hear from the other side for once. Riggs, after the race, didn’t hold back as much as Crafton. “We just got wrecked by the 9,” Riggs said. “I don’t really understand what his thought process is. People say you’re supposed to take advice from the veterans and learn from them how to race, and they race the worst out of anybody.”
Final Thoughts
Adding to Riggs’ frustration was the fact that this was the second time he had suffered in a run-in with Enfinger on a road course this season. “That’s twice this year we’ve gotten wrecked by the nine truck, at Watkins Glen and here. Two separate incidents, two blatantly wrong on his part,” Riggs added.“We dragged a sway bar arm off after that contact and just had a terrible-handling truck the rest of the day.” Overall, another classic drama-filled royal race! Thanks a bunch for reading!
