Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels Is Set To Play In Week 5
Hold your breath, Commanders fans. The cavalry is coming. After a two-week hiatus that felt more like two months, quarterback Jayden Daniels is officially back in the saddle. The team announced Friday that their star QB has been cleared and will start in the Week 5 showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers. And let’s be honest, it’s not a moment too soon.
The Return Of the King (Of the DMV)
Breaking: Commanders QB Jayden Daniels will start against the Chargers Sunday, coach Dan Quinn announced on Friday.

Remember Week 2 against the Packers? Of course, you do. It was the “Thursday Night Football” game where every Washington fan’s heart collectively skipped a beat. Daniels went down with a knee sprain, and while he tried to tough it out, the MRI told a different story. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year was sidelined, and the collective groan from the DMV could be heard for miles.
In his absence, veteran Marcus Mariota stepped in. You have to give the guy credit; he wasn’t half bad. Mariota led the team to a blowout win against the Raiders and kept things respectable in a nail-biter loss to the Falcons. He even became Pro Football Focus’s highest-graded quarterback for a minute there. It was a commendable performance, like a substitute teacher who actually knows the subject. But let’s not kid ourselves—he isn’t Jayden Daniels.
The Commanders offense just has a different swagger with Daniels at the helm. His ability to extend plays with his legs and make something out of nothing is what makes him special. Through the first two games, he’d already racked up 433 passing yards and three touchdowns without a single interception. The man is a walking highlight reel.
Can Daniels Overcome the Injury Bug?
Still, Daniels’ return isn’t a magic wand that fixes everything. The Commanders’ injury report looks like a CVS receipt. Top receiver Terry McLaurin is still out with a quad injury, which is a massive blow. The team also lost Running Back Austin Ekeler and Defensive End Deatrich Wise Jr. for the season. It feels like every week, another key player is heading to the injured reserve list. It is a tough pill to swallow when your franchise quarterback is returning, but his top target is watching from the sidelines.
This Sunday’s matchup against the Chargers is no cakewalk, either. Jim Harbaugh’s squad is sitting at 3-1, and their defense is one of the stingiest in the league. They’re ranked fourth in scoring defense, meaning Daniels will have his work cut out for him. This game has all the makings of a high-scoring shootout, especially with Justin Herbert slinging it on the other side.
So, what should we expect? A little rust from Daniels is probably fair, but his presence alone should energize the entire team. The big question is whether he can elevate a banged-up roster and pull off a much-needed win. One thing’s for sure: with Daniels under center, the Commanders at least have a fighting chance. Grab your popcorn.
