Injury Report – Game Day Update: Arizona Cardinals vs San Francisco – QB Purdy is Out
As the Arizona Cardinals prepare to face the San Francisco 49ers in a crucial Week 3 matchup, both teams are navigating significant injury concerns that could impact the game’s outcome. The status of Will Johnson leaves the Cardinals’ secondary thin, while the 49ers are dealing with uncertainty at the quarterback position and along their offensive line. Â
Update – 1:30 ET -Quarterback Brock Purdy and Jauan Jennings are Out …and will not play in Week 3.Â
Will Johnson leads Arizona Cardinals Injury Update
The Arizona Cardinals are heading into Sunday’s game with a depleted secondary. Cornerback Max Melton is dealing with a knee injury sustained in Week 2, though he was a limited participant in practice this week, offering a glimmer of hope for his availability. His counterpart, Johnson, is less likely to play after injuring his groin and missing practice on both Wednesday and Thursday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon has not officially ruled anyone out, but the outlook for Johnson appears grim.
If both Melton and Johnson are sidelined, the Cardinals will be forced to rely on a less experienced group to contain the 49ers’ offense. Rookies Denzel Burke and Kei’Trel Clark, who finished last week’s game, would likely see significant action, alongside Elijah Jones and Darren Hall. The team may also shift safety Jalen Thompson into the nickel corner role, a position he has played in the past, to provide some veteran stability to a very young cornerback room.
Purdy leads San Francisco 49ers Injury Update
The San Francisco 49ers are facing their own set of challenges, most notably with quarterback Brock Purdy, who is was moved to out on game day. It’s possible Purdy could serve as a backup, but the team’s decision on whether to elevate practice squad quarterback Adrian Martinez on Saturday will be a telling sign of Purdy’s game-day status. – Update – Purdy is out.Â
Beyond the quarterback situation, the 49ers’ offense is banged up elsewhere. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings is questionable with shoulder and ankle injuries, and newly starting left guard Connor Colby is also questionable after suffering a groin injury late in the week. The team has already ruled out wide receiver Jordan Watkins (calf) and offensive lineman Spencer Burford (knee). However, in positive news, left tackle Trent Williams and fullback Kyle Juszczyk have cleared concussion protocol and are expected to play.
