Eagles Defense giving expanded roles to 2024 Rookie Corners for 2025 Season
The Eagles Defense lost a couple of key pieces this offseason in Darius Slay and C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the secondary, and questions have arisen about how Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio will address those needs in the secondary. It’s been just a couple of days at Eagles Training Camp, and we might have some of the answers we are looking for regarding the secondary. First in Base packages, Cooper Dejean is getting looks at Safety alongside Reed Blankenship. The other answer we have is that Quinyon Mitchell is practicing reps on both sides of the formation so he can travel with WRs this season. Let’s dive into these improvements of the Eagles defense.
Cooper Dejean playing Safety in Base
The bigger role for Dejean playing Safety in the base defense set of the Eagles is a huge opportunity for the Eagles defense to keep all of their talented players on the field at the same time, because the Eagles defense is better when Dejean is on the field. Instead of having an inexperienced safety play the base package, it’s smart to have Dejean play that role, along with the nickel role. I love this for the Eagles as it shows confidence in Dejean to absorb more of the responsibility of the duties of the defense in year two. Dejean on the Move to ESPN’s Tim McManus: “I love a challenge.”
Quinyon Mitchell Traveling with WRs
Fangio provided the update earlier on Thursday Morning that Quinyon Mitchell is working on both sides of the formation so he can potentially travel with WRs in games. This is the next step in proving that Mitchell is becoming that elite corner who can shut down anybody. Mitchell had an excellent season last season as a rookie and is poised for a huge jump this upcoming season. This development is the next logical step for Mitchell and is a great sign that he wants to improve at the position himself.
Final Thoughts
The Eagles defense is going to prove a lot of people wrong because they want to keep the train going of what they did in 2024, as these new developments keep going throughout the rest of training camp, like these two developments, Total Apex Sports will be here to report them to you. Along with other NFL stories and updates throughout the rest of the league during the last parts of the offseason and Preseason training.
