Green Bay Packers New QB Coach Praised By Former Division Rival Kirk Cousins
The Green Bay Packers didn’t see much turnover on their coaching staff this offseason. However, one big loss was quarterbacks coach Tom Clements. He had been around the league for years, many of them being with Green Bay. Clements helped Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love, with both acknowledging the role he had in their careers. The team promoted offensive assistant Sean Mannion to be the new quarterbacks coach. He began his coaching career last year in Green Bay, but before that, he played with the Minnesota Vikings during the time Kirk Cousins was the starter. Cousins had nothing but good things to say about Mannion.
Green Bay Packers QB Coach Sean Mannion
Sean Mannion was taken in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Rams. He spent the first four years of his career there before spending 2019, 2020, and 2021 with the Vikings. Mannion was in Minnesota for parts of 2022 and 2023 as well. Cousins isn’t surprised the 33-year-old is rising up in the coaching ranks.
“I really can’t speak highly enough of Sean to you. It would be difficult for me to fully articulate how much I believe in him, how much he helped me as a player when he was in the quarterback room with me, how much I leaned on him to just be another voice, another set of eyes, another person to go to for input.
“And I think I played my best football around him largely because of his involvement there. So, when it was time for his playing career to wind down, it seemed like a natural fit for him to go into coaching. It was just a question of where will he have an opportunity, and it would seem he landed in a really, really good spot with Matt LaFleur and Steno (offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich) and Vrabes (passing-game coordinator Jason Vrable) and all those coaches there. I think highly of all of them. I think he’s on his way in the coaching profession to go on and do some great things.”
Helping Jordan Love
There is some pressure on Jordan Love heading into 2025. The narrative is that Love regressed last season, something the team has pushed back on hard during offseason interviews. Love dealt with injuries, and his receivers led the league in drops. However, there is always room for improvement, and the Packers have a team that is built to win now.
The Green Bay Packers invested in the offense, taking wide receiver Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. GM Brian Gutekunst has been stockpiling receivers, and Josh Jacobs is hungry for another huge year. Love has to show he can win the big game and make this one of the most potent offenses in the NFL.
Final Thoughts
It’s always tough to lose a legendary coach. However, Mannion already knows the Green Bay Packers organization, and the praise from Cousins makes me believe the team made the right choice.
