Green Bay Packers Select WR Matthew Golden With 23rd Overall Pick
The Green Bay Packers had a good season last year but failed to live up to expectations. They only went 1-5 in their division and mostly beat up on inferior teams en route to an 11-6 record. However, making the playoffs for the second straight year under Jordan Love is nothing to be ashamed of. Furthermore, first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley proved he has what it takes to coach an NFL defense. It has been a running joke for a long time that the Packers don’t take receivers in the first round. That streak is now over. For the first time since 2002, the team has selected a skill position in the first round, taking Texas WR Matthew Golden.
Green Bay Packers Select Matthew Golden With 23rd Overall Pick
In 2002, the Green Bay Packers took Javon Walker in the first round. Matthew Golden wasn’t born yet. Since then, they have waited to take receivers, which has worked out well for them. However, they needed some more juice on offense, and Golden is the perfect pick. Last season, he caught 58 passes for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. The wide receivers struggled last year with drops, and with Christian Watson going down with an ACL injury, they needed to add more weapons for Love.
Golden joins a receiver’s room with Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Romeo Doubs. Reed can move back to the slot, and Golden can take the top off a defense. The fact that the draft was in Green Bay when they finally took a receiver in the first round. The crowd erupted when the pick was announced, and thinking about what this offense can be is exciting.
Final Thoughts
The Green Bay Packers needed to help Love. They have invested so much into the offense, and no receiver stepped up last year. Golden has the ability to be a number one target for years to come. Can the offense have a bounce-back year and rack up the points in a tough NFC North?
