Sergio Perez Under Pressure at Red Bull

Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez remains at Red Bull Racing, but his place in Formula 1 looks more questionable than ever due to his disappointing results. Johnny Herbert, a former F1 racer, said Red Bull needs a change if it is serious about retaining its monopoly in the Constructors’ title. How many rumors has it influenced, and, more to the point, where has it put Red Bull in terms of the Constructors Championship race? It could lead the team to look for another driver for the 2025 season.

Sergio Perez’s Season of Struggles

The Mexican driver has certainly struggled this season, admitting his results were not good enough. Perez has not finished above sixth in the last 15 races and sits in eighth place in the World Championship standings. Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen has eight victories and is close to another circuit driver’s title. This has put pressure on Perez’s role on the team.

Skeptics and critics point to Perez’s performance as one of the reasons for Red Bull’s sudden swing from first place to third place in the Constructors’ standings. The emergence of Perez into the championship fight raised the question of whether Red Bull should continue to back Perez or seek out a more successful driver to complement Verstappen in their bid to achieve more team glory.

Herbert’s Perspective: Time for a Change

According to the former F1 driver and commentator Herbert, Red Bull must search for a reliable Emilio driver to form a strong pair with Verstappen if the team aspires for future successful seasons and  Constructors’ Championships. He pointed out that Perez’s tenure at Red Bull was about sponsorship. However, Herbert asks whether Red Bull, a financially sound brand, requires such support to accentuate their operations.

As Herbert noted, Red Bull should find a driver who can match Verstappen’s performance and post steady results. He has been more excited by the juniors of Red Bull, namely Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, who have progressed nicely. Lawson remained quite calm during the race, and Tsunoda also showed a vast improvement, almost claiming a podium position, making both good options to join the senior team.

Conclusion

The status quo is supported by the team principal of Red Bull, Christian Horner, who avoids radical changes, saying that they should be made only with proper evidence. Horner has accepted that Perez has issues and that the team is trying to assist him to perform at his best. A recent change in chassis was one such measure that was taken to try and bring out the best in Perez. Horner also said that Perez was good in Saturday’s race, but Sunday was bad for the racer.
