Michigan Wolverines Flip Top 100 Defensive Back From SEC Powerhouse

Michigan

The 2024 college football season has been a roller coaster of emotions for the Michigan Wolverines. They have had some thrilling victories, such as the one against USC early in the season. Additionally, they beat their in-state rival, the Michigan State Spartans, last week. However, there have been struggles as well. It has been a rotating cast of quarterbacks and the team has suffered brutal losses to Texas and Illinois. The offense looks lost at times, and the passing game is non-existent. The good news for the Michigan faithful is the coaches are hot on the recruiting trail. Top 100 defensive back Shamari Earls has flipped his commitment from Georgia to Michigan.

Michigan Wolverines Flip Shamari Earls

247 has Shamari Earls ranked as a four-star defensive back. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back out of Virginia is the number-one recruit in the state and ranked 67th overall. He was committed to the Georgia Bulldogs, but he announced on social media he would be heading to Ann Arbor late Friday night.

“After deep though and reflection, I have made the decision to recommit from the University of Georgia. This decision comes down to personal reasons and finding the best possible fit for me both academically and athletically. I am beyond thrilled to commit to the University of Michigan.”

“I am excited for the future and to be a part of Coach Sherrone Moore’s vision for sustained success and coach Morgan’s vision for the secondary to be the most competitive & disciplined secondary in the country!!! Michigan is an extraordinary place and I am humbled to continue the great legacy of those who hav come before me. Go blue!”

This is a huge get for the Michigan Wolverines. They are losing two big pieces of their secondary in Will Johnson and Rod Moore. The coaching staff is making sure there is top-tier talent there to replace them. It was the second recruit the Wolverines flipped on Friday. Three-star defensive lineman Benny Patterson was committed to the Cincinnati Bearcats before jumping ship for the Wolverines. With the addition of Shamari Earls, the 2025 class is shaping up to be one of the best in the country.

Recruiting Rankings

According to On3, the Michigan Wolverines have jumped into the top 10 in the 2025 recruiting rankings. They sit in the tenth spot, just ahead of Miami and USC. In the Big Ten, they are third, with Ohio State (2nd) and Oregon (7th) ahead of them. The class is led by five-star offensive tackle Andrew Babalola and 12 four-star players. Michigan is leaning into its strengths by recruiting some of the best linemen and running backs in the nation.

Obviously, a lot can change before the classes are finalized. However, at this point in the cycle, big jumps are not common. The Michigan Wolverines scored two huge recruits and are now sitting pretty in the rankings.

Search For A Quarterback

This season’s struggles have been the lack of high-level quarterback play. In the past two years, Jim Harbaugh and his crew did not focus on bringing in the quarterback of the future. While other programs looked to the transfer portal to find a starter, Michigan had JJ McCarthy running the offense. Once Harbaugh was looking to jump to the NFL, his desire to get another quarterback likely waned. Fans have been licking their chops at reports from the Michigan Wolverines that they are looking to flip the top quarterback recruit, Bryce Underwood, from LSU.

Many wealthy donors have attended the university. These alumni have started to see how they can affect the program through NIL. The rumors are Michigan is prepared to throw a massive NIL package at the top recruit in order to get him to come to Ann Arbor. If Moore and his team were to pull this off, Michigan could be back in the conversation for a national championship very soon. Regardless, landing Shamari Earls shows the Wolverines are still elite when it comes to recruiting.
