The Dallas Mavericks have been consistently in the top five of the NBA power rankings. Most, if not all, people have been high on the Mavericks to start the 2024-25 NBA season. The Mavericks’ chances of achieving a short-lived run are good, as Thursday night’s Halloween game against the Houston Rockets can result in a win.
If the Dallas Mavericks defeat the Rockets and have a perfect or near-perfect homestand, the Mavericks’ consistency in the top five of the NBA power rankings should continue for the time being. Read on for further details surrounding the Mavericks’ consistency.
Dallas Mavericks’ Consistency
The Dallas Mavericks’ consistency has shown in recent NBA power rankings who have ranked the Mavericks in their top five. The rankings are debatable. Everyone has different opinions, but it’s worth checking out the differences among individuals.
NBC’s Kurt Helin ranked the Mavericks third behind the Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder. Helin said:
“Klay Thompson has been everything the Mavericks could have hoped for early in the season, starting with him dropping 22 points on the Spurs in the opener. He’s averaging 19.7 points a game and shooting 45.5% on 11 three-pointers a game [stats were grabbed before the Timberwolves game], but more importantly, the Mavericks defense has been 8.6 points per 100 possessions better with him on the court.
“Overall the Mavericks have been strong defensively to start the season, their 107.3 defensive net rating is fifth best in the league.”
CBS Sports’ Colin Ward-Henninger ranked the Mavericks fifth behind the Thunder, Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Phoenix Suns. Ward-Henninger said, “So far, so good for the Mavs, off to a 3-1 start punctuated by another Luka Doncic dagger step-back 3-pointer to beat the Timberwolves. The defense that coalesced last postseason seems to have carried over, while floor-spacer Klay Thompson is thriving in his new surroundings, averaging 16.5 points on 43% 3-point shooting.”
Thompson a Great Addition To Dallas
ESPN’s pooled power rankings ranked the Mavericks fourth behind the Celtics, Thunder, and Cavaliers. ESPN analyst Tim McMahon said, “Klay Thompson continues to be one of the NBA’s premier perimeter shooters after the amicable separation with his “Splash Brother,” Stephen Curry. Thompson anticipated getting a lot of good looks playing alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Dallas, and he hasn’t been disappointed during the first week of the season.
“He shot 45.5% from 3-point range on 11 attempts per game during the Mavs’ 3-1 start, averaging 19.7 points stats were grabbed before the Minnesota game]. Thompson has stated his determination to get rid of that notion that I’m not the same defender as I once was,’ and he’s also off to a strong start on that end of the court. The Mavs have a 112.7 defensive efficiency with Thompson on the court this season.”
Dallas Mavericks Start 2024-25 Strong
The Dallas Mavericks started the 2024-25 NBA season strong with a 3-1 record entering the Mavericks’ home game against the Houston Rockets at the American Airlines Center on Thursday. The Mavericks vs. Rockets game should be a fun Texas showdown. But there’s a chance the Rockets could play spoiler in the away game. If the Mavericks start the homestand strong, the team’s possible goal of challenging other teams for the No. 1 spot in the upcoming NBA power rankings should be successful.
Dallas Mavericks Retool In the Summer
The Dallas Mavericks tried their best to retool around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in the Summer of 2024. The Mavericks acquired Klay Thompson, Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall, and Spencer Dinwiddie to improve the team’s shooting and defensive options, respectively.
Thompson, Grimes, and Dinwiddie have been positively impacting the Mavericks’ offense. Marshall became the team’s best defensive player. Aside from a new and improved Dereck Lively II, the Mavericks’ additions have helped the team become frequent favorites in the NBA power rankings.
