Detroit Lions Winners and Losers from Week 7

The Detroit Lions need to do these three things to win on Sunday.

The Detroit Lions defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Minneapolis 31-29 in a game that lived up to the hype. The Detroit Lions demonstrated that their offense could match any defense in the league, regardless of how strong they were. The defense showed that they missed Aidan Hutchinson, but overall they still played well. There were many winners in this game, but there were also some losers.

Detroit Lions Winners

Jake Bates

Kicker Jake Bates is without a doubt the biggest winner of the day. Bates, who was employed as a brick salesman a year ago, excelled in his first year with Detroit. He can be reliable when the Lions need points, as he is 10-10 on field goals and 20-21 on extra points. The Detroit Lions have struggled in recent years to find a kicker, but it appears like Jake Bates might be their kicker of the future.

Jahmyr Gibbs

Another winner is Jahmyr Gibbs. This season, Gibbs has been outstanding, with this being his best game of the year. Against Minnesota, he ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and caught 4 passes for 44 yards. The Lions trailed early in the game, but a 45-yard touchdown run by Gibbs gave the offense a boost and brought them back into the game. A guy like Gibbs gives the Lions a huge advantage in the run game and will enable them to ride the run game during key points of a game.

Jared Goff

Jared Goff is a winner after yet another great performance. Goff played well once more, finishing 22 for 25 for 280 yards and two touchdowns. His play over the last two weeks has been MVP-caliber, and now he’s been picked by many as the favorite. In the last four games, the Detroit Lions offense has scored 18 touchdowns, while Goff has only had 6 incomplete passes. If Goff can keep playing like this, the Lions will have no problem offensively against any team in the league.

Amik Robertson

Amik Robertson struggled against Justin Jefferson throughout the day. Robertson allowed 3 catches for 70 yards and a TD. He wasn’t great in coverage. The secondary wasn’t bad besides him, but he will need to bounce back from this next week. He has been a key part of the Detroit Lions secondary this whole year and has been making plays constantly.

Offensive Line

The offensive line gave up a lot of pressure and committed a lot of penalties, making it their worst performance to date. Even though Goff handled the pressure well, it was nonetheless unsettling to witness. In their poorest games of the year, Taylor Decker, Graham Glasgow, and Kayode Awosika collectively gave up 12 pressures and a sack. The offensive line needs to turn things around and get back to playing the way they have for most of the season if the Detroit Lions are going to continue to win.
