New York Mets Face Must-Win Game 5 Tonight

The New York Mets are on the brink of elimination.

Following two rough games at home at Citi Field in Queens, New York against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets are down 3-1 in the NLCS and on the brink of elimination. After taking Game 2 on the road in Los Angeles, the New York Mets headed home in a seemingly strong position with three home games coming up. Unfortunately, that has been the furthest thing from the truth. New York has been dismantled in their first two home games of the NLCS being outscored 18-2.

After such a miserable two games, the New York Mets are left with no margin of error. If the Mets lose one more NLCS game, they will be sent home. New York must not get ahead of itself as they must win Game 5 tonight and send the series back to Los Angeles on Sunday evening. Will the New York Mets be able to prevent the Dodgers from celebrating on their home field tonight?

New York Mets Look To Play a Complete Game

New York’s offense was awful in Games 3 and 4. They went 0-of-14 with RISP over the last two games. Timely hitting was a defining piece of a New York Mets team that was red-hot over the final four months of the regular season. It also allowed them to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies in the first two rounds of the MLB Playoffs. New York is 0-of-17 with RISP in their three losses. In their Game 2 victory, they were 4-of-12 with RISP. The Mets need to get off to a quick start tonight if they want to extend the NLCS.

The pitching staff of the New York Mets has also struggled against a stacked Dodgers lineup. New York’s pitching staff has been handing out free passes at a historic rate in the first four games of the NLCS. The team has issued at least seven walks in each NLCS game. This is not sustainable and is one of the reasons why New York finds itself in a 3-1 hole. Los Angeles Third Baseman Max Muncy has been tremendous in the NLCS and made history in last night’s game. He has drawn a whopping eight walks over the last three games. New York’s pitching needs to be better if they want to stage a comeback.

Looking Ahead To Tonight’s Game

Teams coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the MLB Playoffs is not unheard of. The last team to do so was the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2020 NLCS against the Atlanta Braves. Los Angeles will send Jack Flaherty to the mound tonight as they look to make their first World Series since 2020. Flaherty was tremendous in Game 1 of the NLCS. He stifled the bats of the New York Mets by tossing seven scoreless innings and punching out six. If he can reproduce part of that start this evening, the Los Angeles Dodgers will celebrate at Citi Field in a few hours.

The New York Mets will counter with Starting Pitcher David Peterson as they look to extend their 2024 season. Peterson has a 2.08 ERA in the playoffs this year but did not pitch well in Game 1 of the NLCS. He came in as a relief pitcher and surrendered three runs(two earned) over 2.1 innings of work. He will need to turn in a great performance for the Mets to have a chance this evening. New York will do everything it can to prevent losing three consecutive home games and seeing the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate a National League Pennant on their field.
