AFC East Clash: How the 3-2 Buffalo Bills Escaped the Meadowlands with a Victory

Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills escaped the Meadowlands with a huge road victory over the New York Jets 23-20. The Bills gain a two-game lead over the Jets in the American Football Conference East Division standings. The key to the game was the shortest player on the field.

The Offense

What a difference a week makes for the Bills offense. Last week, in a road loss to the Houston Texans, Buffalo’s offense looked awful. Josh Allen completed only thirty percent of his passes. Missed opportunities and sloppy play cost the team a 23-20 loss on a 59-yard Kai Fairbairn field goal. In week 6, it was a combination of Josh Allen and the shortest player on the field who led the way.. Allen had a combined three touchdowns and continues his streak of not throwing an interception this season.

Ray Davis, a 5 foot 8  running back out of the University of Kentucky, stepped up to take on the number one role with James Cookout, who had a turf toe injury out of action. The rookie combined for over 150 yards from scrimmage. Davis caught a beautifully thrown 42-yard pass from Allen to move the team deep into Jets territory. One of the biggest keys to the game was taking pressure off Josh Allen and preventing him from forcing the ball down the field. The result was a balanced offense that moved the ball easily, averaging 5.9 yards per play.

The Defense

It was a rollercoaster game for the Bills’ defense, which sometimes struggled to get off the field. In the first half, Aaron Rodgers and the Jets offense were able to move the ball down the field with ease. To end the half, Rodgers connected with WR Allen Lizard on a heroic Hail Mary play, resulting in the Jets trailing 20-17 at halftime. In the second half, the aggressiveness of Buffalo’s defense was on full display, with the team sacking Rodgers and intercepting him. The Bills also stopped the run and made the Jets beat them through the air.

The defense capitalized on a game-winning interception by CB Taron Johnson, who returned to the Bills lineup. Johnson jumped a route intended for Mike Williams. After Williams slipped, Johnson was able to slide in and intercept Rodgers.

The Bad

Plain and simple, the team needs to do a better job of not shooting themselves in the foot. Both teams’ penalties were terrible. Referee Adrian Hill was seen more throughout the game than the NFL shows Taylor Swift during a Kansas City Chiefs game. In total, both teams combined for 21 accepted penalties throughout the game. Buffalo needs to do a better job of not giving teams a chance to capitalize on mistakes.

Final Thoughts

The Buffalo Bills return home after a three-game road trip against AFC powerhouses. They will take on the Tennessee Titans at Highmark Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. Tennessee is coming off a 20-17 home loss to division-rival Indianapolis Colts. Buffalo will look to start the season 5-2 with a win over the Titans next week. The Jets move to 2-4 on the season and will travel to Pennsylvania to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football.
