Jayden Daniels Optimistic and Fearless About Week 6 vs. Ravens

Jayden Daniels looks to continue his great rookie campaign.

Sunday is another day for Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels to make and break records and take names. Coming off their 34-13 win against the Cleveland Browns, the Commanders prepare for the “Battle of The Beltway” against the Baltimore Ravens. In what is considered the game of the week by many, the Commanders hope to run away in the NFC East with a 5-1 record. Being 4-1, a first since 2008, already shows progress. To go 5-1 on an away game? The Commanders will be all anyone talks about.

The Commanders are already a big topic of conversation in the NFL. They also know each week is different and must improve on each victory. Going into Week 6 against the Ravens, they cannot afford a slow start similar to Sunday’s game vs. Cleveland. That could sting a lot. While the 34-13 victory was convincing, it took a little time to get into rhythm.

Jayden Daniels Has a Next-Game Mentality

Jayden Daniels always seems to stay focused amidst the hype. Speaking with media after practice Wednesday he credited his poise to Head Coach Dan Quinn “It’s the the thing that he [Quinn] preaches man, next-game mentality. It doesn’t matter what people are trying to hype up…people can say it might be the game of the week or things like that but for us, it’s just another game and they just happen to be an opponent. ”

However, they’re not just any opponent. This is the Baltimore Ravens, the NFL’s top team. They have a quarterback that can run and throw just as well. He also can scramble and score. If the Commanders can beat the Ravens, it’s a big deal. For Jayden Daniels, it’s not about the comparisons though. He respects what fellow Heisman winner and Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson brings to the league.

According to Jayden Daniels his relationship “goes back some time,” but gave no details. “It’s a mutual respect…I like watching good quarterback play. I’m a fan of his, how he plays the game, how he approaches the game. We’re two different quarterbacks, two different styles…I appreciate what he’s done for the sport and what he’s done for the African-American quarterbacks.”

Daniels Is Battle Tested

Entering Week 6 against the league’s top team may be a concern for other starting rookie quarterbacks. It’s important to remember he’s not just any starting rookie quarterback. He played on Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals and fellow LSU/Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and owned the night.

Jayden Daniels finished  Week 3‘s Monday Night Football performance 21-of-23 for 254 yards, setting an NFL rookie record for completion percentage at 91.3%. Furthermore, Daniels became the first player in NFL history to complete 80% of his passes and rush for 150 yards in three games. His 91% completion percentage also set a franchise record and was the highest by a rookie in NFL history.

Stephen A. Smith Might Become a Believer

On ESPN’s First Take Wednesday, Kimberley A. Martin, Stephen A. Smith, Jeff Saturday, and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo reviewed Jayden Daniels’ historic start and if he and the Commanders can beat the Ravens. Smith said the victory puts the entire league on notice:

“These guys have been balling, and Jayden Daniels has been doing his thing.  Who has he been compared to? He’s been compared to a healthy rookie by the name of RG3 [Robert Griffin III]…Who is the only quarterback in football who runs better from behind center than him? It’s Lamar Jackson.

“If this guy shows up and shows out against the Baltimore Ravens even though their defense has been suspect this year, we need to start having a different conversation about just looking at Patrick Mahomes as league MVP. We got to throw this brother up in the conversation.”

Final Thoughts

Considering everything Jayden Daniels has done up to this point, adding the title MVP candidate to the list would not be surprising. It’s hard to forget it’s just Week 6. It’s just as surprising to see everyone talking about the Commanders in a good light. Everyone wants to be a believer. Week 6 may determine who else grabs a Daniels jersey.
