Upon Further Review: Denver Broncos Week 5 Blowout of Las Vegas Raiders

The streak is finally over. After eight games, four years, and the history of the franchise in Las Vegas, the Denver Broncos beat the Raiders in convincing fashion 34-18 on Sunday afternoon.

No Talking

At the outset of the 2024 NFL season, the all-too-familiar conversation circling water coolers, bar rooms, and man caves was: Who is the best? The conversation wasn’t about the best quarterback – some guy in Kansas City has held that title for a minute. It wasn’t about the best wide receiver, although that is a fun one. Rather, the conversation was about whether a sauce or a gaming console was better.

Who is the best cornerback in the NFL today?  Is the New York Jets’ Sauce Gardner or the Denver Broncos Patrick Surtain II (PS2)?  After Week 5, the conversation is over. Kaput, adios, burnt. With his 3 tackles and 2 interceptions, which included a 100-yard pick-six, Surtain is the undisputed best cornerback in the National Football League – and it’s not even close.

Kay Adams on “Up and Adams” Monday: “The true shutdown corner of our generation, and I don’t want to hear it from anybody who doesn’t think so. He doubled down on what he did last week. There are no debates here – this is a slam dunk. This is the best corner in the NFL; he locked down everyone that he covered last week against the [New York] Jets. And then he showed his skills as a playmaker yesterday with the 100-yard pick six, another pick later in the same game.”

Start Talking

Denver Broncos Country, bend your ears in the direction of Dove Valley because your Denver Broncos are part of a conversation that hasn’t taken place in these parts in over seven years. That’s right, we are talking about the playoffs. Playoffs?  Yes. Playoffs.

Granted, we are only five weeks into the season, and there is still a great deal of football to play. With a three-game winning streak in hand and a favorable October schedule, it is reasonable to think that the Denver Broncos could head to Baltimore in Week 9 with a 6-2 record. Most likely, the Broncos will need at least 10 wins to be playoff-eligible.

With the Chargers continuing to Charger and the Raiders in turmoil, the Broncos will not only be in the conversation for the playoffs but for an AFC West crown as well. Yes, Patrick Mahomes is the reigning MVP, but the Broncos beat the Chiefs last year, which makes the possibility, at the very least, interesting.

If the Broncos’ defense continues to play at the current pace and Bo Nix continues to find his rhythm in the NFL, everyone will be talking about… the playoffs.

Keep Talking

Every coordinator in the National Football League has his eyes on the coaching carousel. Vance Joseph is no different. The Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator may be the most valuable person in the Broncos organization. He has taken a group that only has one first-round draft pick and turned them into, arguably, the best defense in the league to this point.

His work so far for the Denver Broncos this year has been nothing less than superb. That kind of work normally gets the attention of owners and general managers who are looking for a new head coach. This week, the Jets relieved Robert Saleh of his duties, and that means there is at least one open head coaching job for next year. Vance Joseph will most definitely be in the conversation for that job and any other job that becomes available.

Denver Broncos’ owner Greg Penner and General Manager Geroge Paton need to keep talking to Vance Joseph and give him whatever it is that he asks for to stay as the Bronco’s defensive coordinator. Yes, the head coaching job is enticing, but can the pockets of the Walton-Penner group find a way to secure Joseph for the Broncos? Keep talking, and let’s see what happens.
