Dallas Mavericks Dante Exum Injury Details; Wrist Might Require Surgery

Dallas Mavericks Dante Exum

Dallas Mavericks player Dante Exum, 29, suffered a wrist injury on Friday. Exum’s wrist injury might require surgery. If that’s the case, he suffered a significant setback after coming off a resurgent season for the Mavericks. Read on for further details to learn the potential extent of his injury.

Dante Exum Injury

Dante Exum’s latest injury set him back in his bounce-back effort, and then the Dallas Mavericks attempt to punch a ticket for a return trip to the NBA Finals. Well, at least for the time being, as the Mavericks suffered a brutal, five-game loss to the Boston Celtics in the Finals. The Mavericks’ goals should be to build up and build out with knockdown shooting, but Exum’s injury can reduce his chances of achieving another resurgence season.

On Friday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania posted an injury update on X, “Dallas Mavericks G Dante Exum has sustained a serious right wrist injury that could require surgery, sources tell @TheAthletic. Treatment options are being evaluated for Exum, who emerged as a key reserve guard on Mavs NBA Finals run last season. Tough early season blow for Mavs.”

After being out of the NBA for two years, Exum played abroad last season and averaged 7.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 53.3% from the field and 49.1% from the three-point line in 55 games with 17 starts. Exum’s other NBA stints were with the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dante Exum Injury Update

Dante Exum injured his right wrist during the Dallas Mavericks’ training camp on the UNLV campus in Las Vegas. Exum’s wrist injury was announced just days after Luka Doncic sustained a left calf contusion, and the Mavericks gave no timetable for his return, just that his updates will be “provided as appropriate.”

Exum will enter his second season with the Mavericks shortly. He played overseas as part of Barcelona and Partizan NIS Belgrade from 2021 to 2023. His injury can hurt the Mavericks’ depth at guard, but at least the team acquired veteran shooting guard Klay Thompson in the offseason.

Kristaps Porzingis Relates to Dante Exum

Boston Celtics power forward and center Kristaps Porzingis can probably relate to Dante Exum. Porzingis, 29, suffered a torn retinaculum in the 2024 NBA Finals against his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, but played in a closeout Game 5, and waited until after the Finals to undergo surgery.

At the Celtics’ media day, Porzingis gave an injury update to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, “The expectation is [to return] sometime in December … But I’m feeling really good and I’m working towards hopefully playing earlier than that.”

Porzingis played for the Mavericks from 2019 to 2022, but his injury history was a significant reason why he was traded out of Dallas. He was unreliable when the team needed him the most, and when he happened to be on the court, his role diminished due to Luka Doncic’s strong presence. He was also traded out of Washington, D.C., but the Celtics appear to successfully utilize his versatility on both sides of the court.
