Former Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz recently did a podcast in the Dominican Republic that caught some media attention. Hall of Fame recipient and playoff MVP Ortiz called Shohei Ohtani the “pretty girl” of the MLB. Causing quite a storm with his calling out of the Dodger star, Ortiz has found himself in hot water. This week on The Dan Patrick Show Red Sox MVP David Ortiz cleared the air on the man breaking records with every at-bat this season.
When Ortiz Stepped On Ohtanhi
September 9th prior to Ohtani breaking the 50/50 record, famed Red Sox power hitter Ortiz spoke about the MVP race, reported by Marca, “[MLB] always had… ‘issues’ not to give me the MVP because I was a designated hitter. I’m going to see what they’re going to say this year when Ohtani, the ‘pretty girl’ of MLB, is in the race.” It was clear former Red Sox DH was disgruntled about how he has been a contender but never chosen for MVP outside of the playoffs. Dodger fans were outraged and there was backlash due to this statement the former Red Sox MVP made.
Dan Patrick Show This Week
On September 30th David Ortiz sat in with the Dan Patrick Show to talk about the playoff race and his thoughts about Ohtanhi. Dan Patrick asks David “… I noticed when you hit 54 HR one year you stole one base, what do you remember about that stolen base David?”
“I got a standing ovation” Ortiz replies “That was not my game. The other day I went on a podcast in the Dominican and what I said got twisted all around…What I said was I want to see how MLB was going to play out not giving Ohtani an MVP this year because they always looked at me as a one-dimensional player even though I had the numbers.
So Ohtani is a special player, he is one of a kind, I don’t think we are going to see a guy like that in a while, he is a complete package. I was looking at his numbers the other day and 50-something stolen bases and he got caught like four times. That is stupid, seriously if he doesn’t get an MVP this year, I will think there is something against DH are not allowed to win an MVP.” This clears things up a bit as far as where former Red Sox star DH Big Papi stands.
The MLB has never elected a DH for regular season MVP which is what Ortiz is and has been clear and firm about. The only reason Ortiz has an MVP is that the MLB awarded it to him in the playoffs with the Red Sox in 2013 after finishing with .688 BA, 2 doubles, 2 homers, and 6 RBIs.
Despite the backlash it seems Ortiz is actually rooting for Ohtani and if you listen to the Dan Patrick Show where he appears, you can tell in his tone he is deeply impressed with the Dodger. Ortiz goes on to explain the weight of DH on and off the field and there are plenty of things that role does to take pressure off the clubhouse. The Red Sox fans always loved the heart Ortiz brought to Boston, keeping things balanced was part of the job he divulged.
MLB Has Big Decisions To Make
Ohtani has produced big numbers this season 54 homeruns and 59 stolen bases, all the while winning the hearts of baseball fans globally. If the MLB does decide to give Ohtani the MVP this year they will have to deeply consider what it may mean for the future of the MLB. America thinks Ohtani is worthy of the MVP and no player is close to producing his numbers but if Ortiz is right then the MLB will just see him as a one-dimensional player. Fans must wait until after the World Series to discover what direction the MLB will choose to go this season.
