Kansas City Chiefs Outlast Division Rival LA Chargers, 17-10

The Chiefs defeated the LA Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs extended their perfect start to the season, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 17-10 in a hard-fought divisional matchup. Kansas City struggled offensively early, but key defensive plays and late scoring drives helped them secure their fourth win of the season.

Despite a sluggish first half, the Chiefs defense held strong and created opportunities for the offense to eventually turn the game around. With injuries continuing to pile up, Kansas City relied heavily on their defense to stay competitive until Patrick Mahomes and the offense found their rhythm.

Early Struggles On Offense

The Chiefs’ offense sputtered out of the gate. On their first drive, Patrick Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce for a 38-yard pass, but momentum was quickly lost after a Carson Steele fumble. This turnover gave the Chargers possession, and they capitalized with a 74-yard drive, ending in a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

Mahomes‘ early struggles continued, throwing his fifth interception of the season on the next drive. Chargers Cornerback Kristian Fulton returned the interception to the Chiefs’ 29-yard line. Although Kansas City’s Rashee Rice forced a fumble, the Chargers recovered and extended their lead to 10-0 with a 50-yard field goal. The first quarter ended with the Chiefs down 10-0.

Injuries added to Kansas City’s problems. Rice, who had forced the fumble earlier, was ruled out for the remainder of the game due to an injury. This compounded the team’s struggles, as they were already without Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and Isiah Pacheco.

Chiefs Find Their Footing

The Chiefs defense stepped up in the second quarter, forcing a three-and-out to give the offense another shot. Despite this, Kansas City’s offense continued to struggle, with multiple three-and-outs and Mahomes being sacked for the third time in the first half.

However, the Chiefs’ defense kept them in the game. Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense managed only short gains, and Chris Jones recorded a sack on Herbert, stifling their momentum. The Chiefs finally capitalized late in the second quarter when Mahomes connected with rookie Wide Receiver Xavier Worthy for a 54-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 10-7.

Worthy’s speed shined on the play, as he reached 21.46 mph—one of the fastest plays in the league this season. After another defensive stand by the Chiefs, Harrison Butker’s missed 65-yard field goal attempt ended the first half with Kansas City trailing 10-7.

Defense Shines, Offense Rallies

In the third quarter, the Chiefs defense remained dominant, forcing the Chargers to miss a 55-yard field goal. Kansas City took advantage of the stop and marched down the field, settling for a 37-yard field goal by Butker to tie the game at 10-10 with 6:26 left in the third.

Kansas City’s defense came up huge in the fourth quarter, stopping the Chargers on a 14-play, 67-yard drive that stalled at KC’s 3-yard line. On the ensuing possession, the Chiefs marched down the field, highlighted by a 29-yard reception by Tight End Noah Gray. Kareem Hunt also contributed with hard running, and Samaje Perine capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown, giving the Chiefs a 17-10 lead.

Chris Jones recorded his second sack of the game on the Chargers’ next possession, forcing another LA punt. From there, the Chiefs controlled the clock, with a 15-yard catch by Worthy effectively sealing the win. The Chiefs defense forced seven consecutive scoreless drives to close out the game, solidifying the victory.

Final Thoughts

Despite early offensive struggles, Kansas City’s defense and timely plays from Mahomes and the offense, allowed the team to survive another week. The Chiefs are now 4-0, and while the offense has yet to fully hit its stride, the defense continues to carry the load in critical moments.

With the defense continuing to step up week after week, combined with emerging playmakers like Xavier Worthy Travis Kelce, and Kareem Hunt, it shows the Chiefs still can win even without their best offensive performances. As Kansas City heads into Week 5, finding more consistency on offense will be key to adding another win to their season total.
