3 Keys to Victory for the Detroit Lions in Week 4

On Monday night, the Detroit Lions will host the Seattle Seahawks in a game that should be exciting and high-scoring. Detroit is coming off a fantastic victory in Arizona, where their defense held Kyler Murray and the Cardinals to just 13 points. Seattle just defeated the Miami Dolphins at home to record their third straight victory. Although Seattle has a strong squad as well, the Lions have a fantastic chance to win this game. Detroit must accomplish these three goals if they are to come out with a win.

The Detroit Lions Need To Limit Turnovers

Having already thrown four interceptions this season, Jared Goff has not had a great start. He has been pushing some throws into double coverage and placing the ball in danger. With one of the top secondarys in the NFL, the Seahawks will be looking to pick off at least one of Goff’s passes early on. While Detroit is anticipated to rely on the run, Goff will still occasionally need to make some crucial throws. Goff must reduce his turnovers if the Detroit Lions are to win this game. Giving Seattle a short field and forfeiting points on offense will prove to be costly and could cost Detroit the game.

Don’t Give Geno Smith Easy Throws

The Detroit Lions’ secondary has often struggled, while Geno Smith has looked impressive. The Seahawks will pose a challenge to the Lions since they have one of the strongest wide receiver cores in the NFL, led by DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Terrion Arnold keeps getting better every week, allowing only 31 yards on a 33% completion percentage when he was targeted last week. Carlton Davis has had struggles, but he gets better every week.

The Detroit Lions’ run defense is playing so well that the Seahawks will have to throw the ball a lot. This week, Arnold and Davis will both be expected to have their best games, and I believe they can. Making Smith make difficult throws will give Detroit a significant defensive edge and likely help them walk out with a win.

Trust the Run Game

The last thing the Detroit Lions should do is keep relying on their running game. Last week, Goff was relieved of a great deal of pressure by David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, who each finished with 100 yards. Whether or not Frank Ragnow is playing, the Lions’ offensive line is among the finest in the league, and they should try to run the ball a lot. Goff will be relieved of a great deal of pressure and able to prevent turnovers if the Lions are once again successful at running the ball. The Detroit Lions’ success on Monday will likely depend on their run game, which has the potential to determine whether they win or lose.
