Michigan Wolverines Rocket Up Top 25 Standings After Victory Over USC

Michigan Wolverines Sherrone Moore talks Alex Orji and Top 25

Many wrote off the Michigan Wolverines after their loss to Texas. The team’s struggles against Arkansas State and Fresno State also did not inspire fans. People feel a little different after the Wolverines took down the USC Trojans on Saturday at the Big House. It was pretty at times, but they were able to put together a game-winning drive and beat a ranked opponent. The voters of the Top 25 liked what they saw. The Michigan Wolverines vaulted up the standings, getting up to no. 12.

Michigan Wolverines Jump In AP Top 25

The Michigan Wolverines are one spot ahead of the team they just beat. The rest of the teams ahead of them have not lost a game this season. What is helping Sherrone Moore’s team is the fact their only loss comes at the hand of the number one team in the nation. Texas received 44 first-place votes to edge out Georgia and Ohio State. The SEC occupies the next three spots, with Alabama, Tennessee, and Ole Miss staying put. The weekend’s biggest loser was Missouri, which fell to 11th after their overtime win against Vanderbilt.

Michigan is now the highest-ranked one-loss team. The defense looked dominant yesterday. Wink Martindale’s crew was constantly in the backfield, disrupting the quarterback. While there were some blown coverages, the defense kept them in the game. This team was written off two weeks ago but now has a renewed sense of hope.

Looking Ahead

The Michigan Wolverines have plenty of opportunities to show they are for real. Number eight, Oregon comes to Ann Arbor at the beginning of November and will be another opportunity for Michigan to show the Big Ten newcomers who is boss. In the middle of October, a trip to Illinois suddenly became a huge game after the Fighting Illini beat Nebraska on Friday night. The season, of course, ends with a trip to Columbus, where the Wolverines will look to make it four straight over the Buckeyes.

The Top 25 has respected the Michigan Wolverines all season. While this team isn’t of the same caliber as last year’s squad, there is still plenty of talent up and down the roster. If the offense can become more potent, this team could surprise some of the teams ahead of them later in the season. It’s a long season but if this team is starting to find their groove, it could lead to another Big Ten title.
