The Washington Commanders’ investment in a new kicker paid off in a major way in their 21-18 win against the New York Giants Sunday.
Kicker Austin Seibert kept Washington alive, kicking a perfect game. He scored all the points, kicking from 26, 27(twice), 29, 30, 33, and 45 yards. Going into Sunday’s game the goals were simple: Quarterback Jayden Daniels was to stay in the pocket and use the legs of his offensive weapons. He did well, completing 23 for 226 yards. Running back Brian Robinson carried 17 for 133 yards. Tight End Zac Ertz with four catches for 62 yards.
The Commanders dominated the First Half’s time of possession (21:39) and held the Giants to roughly eight minutes of offense. However, they only had nine points to show for it. These points all were from field goals, a testament to the importance of the Washington Commanders having an effective kicker in place. Overall, the time possession would be an important portion of the game’s pacing. Overall, the Washington Commanders kept control of the ball 37 minutes of the game. The Giants controlled the ball for only roughly 23 minutes.

The Secondary was continuously picked apart yet again. A last-minute Giants touchdown drive before the end of the Half exposed a backfield that couldn’t handle a play filled with a few delays and scattering wide receivers. Let’s call it how it is: If Seibert had an off day, the Commanders would have had a horrible season home opener.
To make matters more complicated, the Secondary had to also work without cornerback Emanuel Forbes Jr. “Mike [Davis] and [CB] Noah [Igbinoghene] will take up a lot of that action,” head coach Dan Quinn in response to Forbes’ being inactive Sunday. “And so those would be the ones that that’ll fill into that space.”
The Washington Post reported Friday that Forbes Jr. had surgery to fix the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. It’s unclear how long it will take for him to recover, or if he will be placed on injured reserve missing four games. Other Inactive players from the defense included safety Darrick Forrest, linebacker Dominique Hampton, and defensive end Jamin Davis.
Washington vs. New York Giants: 3Q Fumble Not A Real Turning Point
With 12:58 left in the Third Giants running back Benjamin St. Juste fumbled the ball at the Washington 32 with Safety Jeremy Chinn recovering for the Commanders. This gave Daniels the chance again to get into the end zone. Surprisingly, it was the same result: Nine plays, 56 yards burning 4:51 off the clock having to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Seibert. The Washington Commanders were 0-6 in red zone attempts. However, the five false starts in the red zone cannot be ignored, which led to a loss of yards and a change in strategy that seemed clumsy at times.
Washington Commanders: 4Q Stop Key To Sealing Win
With two minutes left in the game tied at 18 a piece, Washington was able to stop the Giants on a Fourth and Four. With a 3rd and Goal at the Giants 12, Seibert would kick his seventh field goal to seal the win. Seibert was seven for seven with his furthest being from the 45-yard line. While this showed Daniels can get in scoring position, the red zone remained elusive to him the entire game.

While a win is a win, the Washington Commanders should be embarrassed at their red zone attempts. If there were any doubts as to why having a good Kicker was a big deal in the past couple of weeks, fans saw it in Sunday’s game. If they put as much time focusing on closing drives in the end zone the way they focused on finding an efficient Kicker, Sunday’s game would have been more convincing. Jayden Daniels did show some signs of positive passing administration on the field, which is good. Overall a decent game with room to improve.
