The expectations for rookie Bo Nix coming into his rookie year were high. His NFL debut in Seattle showed potential; now, he must continue improving.
Good Things
Denver Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton knew after just a few throws at Bo Nix’s pro day at the University of Oregon that Bo Nix was his guy. The night before, Payton had given Bo Nix a game plan. The coach admitted it was more than Nix or any other rookie could handle. That was the point. Payton, known for his attention to detail, wanted to see how Nix would carry himself on and off the field. A few months later, with the 12th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Bo Nix was a Denver Bronco.
Bo Nix began his NFL journey under Coach Payton in the not-so-friendly confines of Seattle’s Lumen field. Nix demonstrated the same professionalism and poise in Seattle as in Eugene. The moment was not too big for him. He was poised and operated the huddle and game in a manner that showed the potential for Nix to be the Broncos quarterback for years to come.
Despite being behind on the scoreboard, Bo Nix led a competitive and professional drive at the end of the game, leading to his first NFL rushing touchdown. His teammates were impressed with his competitiveness and desire to win. His poise and demeanor will go a long way in his development as a locker room leader.
Things To Improve
Have you ever stubbed your little toe on the corner of a table? You never know how much you need your little toe until the pain shoots through your entire body with every step you take. Feet are essential to everyday living. For an NFL quarterback, feet are important.
Denver Broncos Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi said as much in his weekly press conference.
“There was one play in particular where I think we had a chance at a big play, and he just had the wrong footwork,” Lombardi said of Nix. “He was a little ahead of the throw, which caused it to look very inaccurate. Just a couple of little details like that and a couple of throws. The two interceptions, he kind of forced them in there.”
Poor footwork leads to missed opportunities and turnovers. Coming out of college, Bo Nix was known for his sound fundamentals. Therefore, there is no reason for panic in the Broncos locker room. Sean Payton has great confidence in Nix and believes that the issues were more with the people surrounding Nix.
“I think part of being a young player is he’s a fairly confident. I don’t want to say kid, but, yeah, I felt the whole time, he was into it, competing,” Payton said of Nix. “We just got to be better around him and that’s my impressions from just watching it without looking at the tape.”
Entire teams, not one quarterback, decide victories in the National Football League. Nix has to show improvement every week. But the Broncos, whether they want to admit it or not, are a team in a rebuilding mode. The Denver Broncos need to improve to beat the Steelers on Sunday.
Injury Report
LT Garret Bolles, WR Josh Reynolds, and C Luke Wattenberg all missed significant time in practice for the Broncos this week. Each has been moved to full participation for Week 2. Rookie 7th round draft pick DeVaughn Vele, who had 8 catches on 8 targets in Week 1 in Seattle, is out for the game with a rib injury. Fourth round pick Troy Franklin was activated from the practice squad to the full roster to replace Vele.
Conclusion
The Broncos will have a difficult task against the Steelers on Sunday. Bo Nix must build upon his poise and improve his footwork to get the ball to his playmakers. Having Bolles and Wattenberg healthy will be an excellent security measure for Nix as he and the Broncos aim to secure their first victory of the 2024 season.
