Quarterback is always the most talked about position leading up to the NFL draft. Every year 4-6 teams try to find the next Aaron Rodgers or Patrick Mahomes. Six of the first 12 picks were quarterbacks in the 2024 draft. While that won’t be the case next year, there are two QBs to watch for the 2025 draft when Wisconsin hosts #4 Alabama.
Wisconsin Transfer
Let’s start with Wisconsin QB Tyler Van Dyke. The redshirt senior transfer is a good size at 6-foot-4 225 pounds. I remember watching him as a freshman at Miami in 2021. He was ACC Rookie of the Year and threw for 2,931 yards, 25 TDs, and just 6 interceptions. Van Dyke was looking like a potential first-round pick.
Unfortunately, Van Dyke got injured and his production suffered as a result. In the last two seasons, Van Dyke threw 29 TDs to 17 interceptions. He decided to transfer to Wisconsin for his senior season. If he can stay healthy and return to the form of his freshman season, Van Dyke could fly up the draft boards. He is currently #337 in the consensus draft big board.
Alabama Junior
Alabama’s Jalen Milroe is one of the best QBs in the country. He is off to a hot start this season statistically. The 6-foot-2 225-pound junior has thrown for 399 yards, five TDs, and zero interceptions. He is coming off a season where he threw for 23 TDs and ran for another 12. Wisconsin will be his first real test of the season.
What makes Milroe stand out is his dual-threat ability. He has elite athleticism for the position and is a threat to scramble on every play. But he is not just a scrambling quarterback. Milroe has a strong arm and is one of the best deep-ball passers in the country. He can make every NFL throw and plays in a pro-style scheme. Milroe’s mechanics and footwork can be inconsistent, something that will have to be cleaned up in the NFL. But he has the toughness professional teams want in a QB. He is not afraid to wait until the last second, stand in the pocket, and take a hit.
Milroe also has strong leadership qualities and came back from his early season benching in 2023 to have an outstanding season. His legendary throw in the Iron Bowl last season against rival Auburn will be talked about for a long time. Without his clutch performance, Alabama did not get into the college football playoff last season. Milroe is currently #50 on the consensus big board.
Final Thoughts
Van Dyke hopes to put those injury-plagued seasons behind him and prove he can play QB in the NFL. Milroe hopes to build on his sophomore season and show teams he should be one of the first QBs taken in the draft and a 1st round pick. Wisconsin hosts Alabama at Noon Eastern this Saturday on FOX.
