Running back was one of the weaker positions in the 2024 draft. Only one RB was taken in the first two rounds. That will not be the case in the 2025 draft. This class is stronger at the top and deeper as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to see five taken in the top 50. Ashton Jeanty could and possibly should be one of them.
Once Tennessee had pulled away from North Carolina St, I turned to Peacock to watch Boise St at Oregon. The player I was most excited to see was 5-foot-9 215-pound Boise St junior running back Ashton Jeanty. In his first game, he ran for 267 yards on 20 carries and an insane six touchdowns. But that was against Georgia Southern. I wanted to see how he fared against one of the best teams in the country.
Ashton Jeanty Dominant Performance
Oregon is currently ranked 7th in the AP Top 25 and was one game away from making the playoff last year. This was Boise St’s strongest opponent and a test for Jeanty. He was certainly up to the task and took the game over.
With 1:52 to go in the 2nd quarter, Jeanty looked to be stopped behind the line of scrimmage.
But he broke two tackles and ran for 31 yards on the play. This set up a field goal and a 20-14 halftime lead. With 13:19 to go in the 4th quarter, the Broncos trailed by seven. Jeanty would rip off a 70-yard touchdown, showing off his breakaway speed to tie the game. He finished with 25 carries for 192 yards and 3 TDs
Boise St was the better team on Saturday, but they would fall to Oregon 37-34 on a game-ending field goal. Oregon scored two special teams touchdowns in the 2nd half, which proved too much for Boise St to overcome. The best player on the field was clearly Jeanty, and Oregon had no answer for him. Jeanty’s combination of speed, quickness, vision, and ability to break tackles has NFL teams excited. He almost always falls forward to gain extra yards at the end of his runs.
Top Running Back in the Draft
I believe Jeanty is the top running back prospect for the 2025 draft. The consensus draft big board agrees as he finds himself #19 overall, first among running backs. He will have competition from Ollie Gordon II from Oklahoma St, Omarion Hampton from UNC, and the Ohio St combo of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. All five of these guys are potential first-round picks. But none of them are off to a better start than Jeanty. Boise St’s next game is Saturday against Portland St. on FS1.
