Cleveland Browns Controversially Lay Claim to ‘Best Corner Group in NFL’ In 2024

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz claims the team has the best group of cornerbacks in the NFL.

With the Cleveland Browns facing off against the visiting Dallas Cowboys and superstar Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb, the team’s Defensive Coordinator, Jim Schwartz, believes that his club is well-suited to face off against the NFL’s 2023 leader in receptions.

Schwartz said in a story published on the Browns’ official website:

“I like our matchups. This is NFL football, man. This is awesome. One of the best receivers in the NFL and what I consider the best corner group in the NFL. We play a lot of man-to-man, so, it’s going to be fun to watch those guys.”

The Cleveland Browns will look to counter Lamb with a group of corners headlined by Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome II.

The Cleveland Browns figure to boast one of the league’s top defenses this season, and it will be tested right off the bat by a Cowboys team that features freshly-contracted Quarterback Dak Prescott throwing to Lamb, who hauled in 135 receptions on 181 targets last season.

However, while much of the focus of the Cleveland Browns defense remains on Defensive End Myles Garrett, Schwartz believes that his group of corners — Ward, Newsome II, Martin Emerson Jr., Cameron Mitchell, Myles Harden, and Kahlef Hailassie — can compete with anyone in the league.

For his part, Newsome says there is no drop off in talent from the top to the bottom of the depth chart. He told clevelandbrowns.com:

“Meaning, like, if one of us, needs a sub, we could easily bring somebody in, and we don’t have to change anything. With us, like, top to bottom, we got all guys that can play. So, I think we’re very special. Then we got a lot of guys with a lot of unique talents. MJ’s length. We got Ward’s quickness. Me, I’m kind of in the middle. You got Cam Mitchell’s speed, Myles Harden’s feet and everybody. So, I just think we got a great room where a lot of guys can do a lot of things.”

Newsome Back and Healthy For Browns Opener

While the Cleveland Browns have some injury concerns heading into Week 1 — most notably Offensive Tackles Jed Willis (out) and Jack Conklin (questionable) — Newsome isn’t one of them.

The fourth-year pro was hampered by a hamstring injury during the offseason and into training camp, but said he is ready to play Sunday. Cleveland Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski has also said that Newsome appears fit for the season opener.

While Newsome and three-time Pro Bowler Ward headline the cornerback position for Cleveland, it was Emerson who led the team with four interceptions last season. The third-year pro ranks fifth in the league with 29 passes defensed since entering the NFL in 2022.
