One of the more fascinating players available for the 2025 NFL Draft is Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter. The 6-foot-1 185 junior is one of the best cornerbacks in the country and one of the best wide receivers. He is also among the best prospects in the draft and has a chance to go #1 overall. Hunter is currently ranked first in the 2025 draft consensus big board.
There hasn’t been a true two-way player in the NFL since Chuck Bednarik in the 1960s. With NFL teams playing 17 games now, it is tough to make it through the season on one side of the ball, let alone both. Just how durable Hunter is could determine his draft position. Last year, he missed three games but still led the country in snaps played.
As a receiver, he would only be the average height for an NFL player. He also has a thinner frame than most wideouts. But Hunter would be two inches taller than the average corner and right around the average weight. As we get closer to the NFL Draft in April, it will be interesting to see which position draft evaluators see him playing.
Travis Hunter the Receiver
Let’s talk about Travis Hunter, the wideout. The first thing I notice is his quick initial get-off. Hunter can run the full route tree and has the deep speed to threaten you vertically. He always looks in control and is extremely dangerous in the open field. Knowing how a cornerback thinks has to be a huge advantage. The only real struggle I see is that he needs to use his hands better to get off bump-and-run coverage.
Hunter the Cornerback
Since he also plays receiver, he has tremendous hands and ball skills for a CB. He is taller than most
corners and excels in man coverage. He has the athletic traits to defend all types of wide receivers. As good as he is in man coverage, he is even better in zone. His instincts and high football IQ make him an ideal zone corner. He is also a willing tackler in the run game and is unafraid to throw his body around.
Final Thoughts On His NFL Draft Stock
Obviously, Hunter cannot play every snap on offense and defense in the NFL. It’s a long season, and his body won’t hold up. Right now, Hunter is a better WR now than he is a CB. But he has the upside of a shutdown corner in the pros. I believe the team that drafts Hunter will play him on defense full-time but also have an offensive package for him. He’s too dynamic to keep off the field on offense. If he doesn’t hit his ceiling at cornerback, he can simply move to wide receiver full-time.
I expect him to go in the top 10, if not the top 5, in the 2025 NFL Draft.
