This WNBA draft class has a lot of expectations that many will expect them to live up to. It’s no secret that the college basketball season has received increased attention and should help pave the way for a more popular league.
But in terms of the professional setting, officially, everything starts tonight. But when you consider all the pre-draft movement and storylines heading into the night, it appears that this league is ready to take the next step into becoming more a part of the mainstream in terms of basketball consumption.
But long-term, do you see any potential surprises or sleeper value in this class?
All According To Plan In The WNBA Draft
The success or lack thereof for any player depends on fit. But this is less the case when you have a player like Caitlin Clark. The Indiana Fever are already seeing their ticket sales skyrocket in anticipation of the now-former Iowa Hawkeye joining their ranks. Clark is used to having the hopes and expectations of a program on her shoulders and is used to the media attention and limelight. Therefore, it’s easy to see why this pick was not only a no-brainer but also a move that will be looked at as something of a game-changer and a better culture enhancer, not just for this team but for the WNBA as a whole.
Help Needed For WNBA
The move is something that should not only bring up the level of basketball and fan expectations but will more immediately help this Fever WNBA team. It’s known how inadequate funding is a persistent issue throughout this league. However, as we have seen, everyone is flocking to find out about Caitlin Clark and everything that she’s doing. Therefore, this move will not only help the team on the basketball court but also financially. Maybe it’s unfair to place all of the burden of the league on one person, but luckily this isn’t entirely the case.
Adjusting To WNBA
It’s not known exactly how her level of play will translate to this level. It’s already been stated how some feel that the increased physicality and IQ of players will at least cause her to be forced to adjust. But until it’s seen, particularly in one-on-one situations, it’s hard to envision too many players being able to stop Clark. One aspect to monitor is if she will need to play off the ball more and be used to not having as many opportunities, particularly if she is in a cold shooting streak. But in terms of can’t-miss prospects for the WNBA in terms of everything, Clark is certainly one of them.
