Will Warren was looking for his first-ever major league win. Warren got it as the Yankees won 8-4 over the Giants. Warren pitched well for the Yankees. Warren’s start, though not as short as Marcus Stroman’s, was still a 4-inning tax on the bullpen.
The Yankees’ bullpen has been overused this season, and Warren tried to make the situation better and get his first major league win. With Stroman going on the injured list today, Warren will earn a spot on the Yankees’ starting rotation. Are you excited that Warren will make the starting rotation?
Lineups For the Game
The Giants had Mike Yastrzemski batting first and playing right field. Willy Adames played shortstop and batted second. Jung Hoo Lee batted third and played center field. Matt Chapman played third base and batted fourth. Heliot Ramos was the left fielder and batted fifth. Lamont Wade Jr. was the first baseman batting sixth. Wilmer Flores was the designated hitter and batted seventh. Sam Huff was the catcher and batted eighth. This is the first lineup change for the Giants from last night. Tyler Fitzgerald was the second baseman and batted ninth.
For the Yankees, Ben Rice led off and was the designated hitter. Aaron Judge batted second and played right field. Cody Bellinger was the center fielder batting third. He moved to left field when Trent Grisham entered the game in the eighth inning. Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman batting fourth.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. batted fifth and was the second baseman. Anthony Volpe batted sixth and played shortstop. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted seventh. Jasson Dominguez played left field and batted eighth. Trent Grisham entered the game for him in the eighth inning and played center field. Oswaldo Cabrera was the third baseman and batted ninth.
Scoring Summary: Yanks Against the Giants
The Yankees scored in the first inning as Bellinger tripled and Judge scored. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead. The Yankees extended the lead to 2-0 after Goldschmidt hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bellinger. Flores hit a two-run home run in the second inning for the San Francisco Giants. That tied the game at 2.
The Yankees scored 5 runs in the fifth inning, though with their bullpen, the 7-2 lead was not safe. Bellinger singled and Judge scored. Then, Goldschmidt hit a ground-rule double, scoring Judge. Volpe hit a sacrifice fly scoring Bellinger. Then, later in the inning, Dominguez had a 2-run single scoring Goldschmidt and Chisholm. That made the score 7-2.
However, the score was not to stay like that for long. The Giants scored 2 runs in the sixth inning when Flores had a bases-loaded 2-run single that scored Adames and Kim. That made the score 7-4 In the bottom of the sixth inning, Rice hit a 113 MPH home run making the score 8-4 Yankees. Devin Williams came in in the ninth inning and got the final 3 outs. That was important.
Notes From the Game
This game was 41 degrees Fahrenheit with drizzle. However, the adverse conditions did not seem to affect Warren. He struck out the first batter of the game, and unlike last night, the Giants did not score in the first inning. The Yankees managed two runs. Warren threw only 5 innings but was in line for the win with the Yankees taking a 7-2 lead in the fifth.
Warren is wearing number 98. As a new player on the Yankees, he chose a high number because the numbers between 1 and 10 are retired, as are several others. It is funny how things work out. With Stroman going on the injured list, Warren and Carlos Carrasco will stay in the starting rotation. San Francisco Starting Pitcher Jordan Hicks has a top-10 ground ball percentage in Major League Baseball. This was the day Candlestick Park opened. Barry Bonds also hit a home run to McCovey Cove in 2004.
Conclusion
This was another bad game for the New York Yankees. Warren’s short start meant they had to further tax their bullpen. They play the Giants again tomorrow in the last game of the season and have Carlos Rodon starting. He pitches longer than Warren or Stroman but tends to make too many mistakes. Especially, for someone who makes $28 million a year.
