Wayne Rooney is Back

Wayne Rooney

It was a glorious weekend for Manchester United fans as football legend Wayne Rooney made his return to the soccer pitch. The English footballer returned to the spotlight and made headlines in a charity match for football legends against Celtics FC.

Wayne Rooney’s Still Got It

In what might be the greatest comeback in his career, Wayne Rooney scored an astounding free-kick for Manchester United on Saturday. The match against Celtic for football legends took place at Old Trafford. The 38-year-old proved he had some juice left in him when he kicked the ball into the top corner of the Hoops net. The football legend made good use of the opportunity created when the Hoops’ Joe Ledley fouled Man United’s Darren Fletcher. The Red Devil icon’s goal surprised the MUTV commentary team. Tim Long was quick to admit that Wayne Rooney still has it!

However, his goal in the 42nd minute was quickly equalized by Gary Hooper, giving Celtic FC a fighting chance. The match ended in a draw, which proceeded into a penalty shootout. Celtic FC took the win over Man United by 5-4. The English football claimed to be “alright with the ball” at his feet but made a joke about his fitness status, referencing the couple of pounds he has added over the years.

This headline-worthy goal is even more memorable because it has been two years since a Manchester United player netted a goal from a free kick. The last time was back in April 2022 when football GOAT Cristiano Ronaldo completed a hat-trick over Norwich, giving Man United a 3-2 win.

Rooney expressed how happy he was to be back at the place that solidified his status as one of the greatest footballers of all time to ever play on a soccer pitch. The charity game was for the Manchester United Foundation. Wayne stated he was more than willing to support the organization and help the Foundation ‘put smiles on children’s faces.’

Other Manchester United legends who played at the match include Mikael Silvestre, Antonio Valencia, Ronny Johnsen, and Dimitar Berbatov, who have all won the Premier League. The substitute lineup featured Denis Irwin, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt. Together, the Red Devils and the Hoops were able to raise about £1 million for the Manchester United Foundation.

Catching Up With Wayne Rooney

It has been seven years since Wayne Rooney put on the Manchester United kit. During his time with the Red Devils, Rooney climbed the ranks to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. He scored 253 goals in 559 matches from 2004 to 2017.

Since hanging up his boots in 2021, Wayne Rooney has taken up managerial stints with DC United, Derby County, and Birmingham City. Presently, Rooney is the manager of Plymouth Argyle, which has lost four games back-to-back. Albeit excited, the football legend admitted prior to the match he was a bit scared to put on his boots and play at the Old Trafford stadium. However, seeing the fans one more time gave him what he needed to create magic on the soccer pitch.

Conclusion

Evidently, Wayne Rooney still has a strong influence on the sidelines or in the media. Fans were excited to see his reappearance on the soccer pitch and are excited to see what is next for the football icon.  Rooney was quick to remind fans that his passion and influence on soccer are far from over.
