This weekend’s Premier League highlight features the first North London derby of the season, as Tottenham Hotspur host Arsenal at a vibrant Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak scored either side of a Dan Burn own goal to hand Tottenham their first Premier League defeat of the season. Despite dominating possession, Spurs struggled to capitalize on their chances, a recurring issue from previous matches.
Tottenham entered the international break following a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United, while Arsenal had their perfect start halted by a contentious 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. The St James’ Park jinx continues for Spurs, who have managed to reduce their margin of defeat each season—falling from a 6-1 loss in 2022-23 to a 2-1 defeat in their third game of the 2024-25 season.
Tottenham vs. Arsenal: Team Form & Head-to-Head

After a 4-0 win over Everton appeared to signal a recovery, Tottenham’s inability to finish chances was evident again in their Newcastle match. Now sitting 10th in the table, Tottenham will look to end a streak of alternating home wins and losses that has persisted since April. The fact that they crushed Everton at home in their first match of the season adds to the uncertainty of their form.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from their controversial draw with Brighton. During that match, Declan Rice was controversially sent off for a second yellow card, leading to Brighton’s equalizer and denying Arsenal their third consecutive win. Despite this setback, Arsenal remains in fourth place in the Premier League, just two points behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
Arsenal has won their last two Premier League visits to Spurs but has never won three consecutive away games against them in the league era.
Team News
Arsenal face a tough challenge without Rice, who is suspended, and Martin Odegaard, who injured his ankle while on international duty and is expected to be out for at least three weeks.
Tottenham’s attack was also hampered by the absence of their two main strikers, Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, though only Richarlison is confirmed out. Yves Bissouma’s fitness is a concern after a recent injury, but Postecoglou hopes Micky van de Ven’s knee issue will resolve in time for the match.
For Arsenal, Odegaard’s absence might push Kai Havertz into a deeper midfield role alongside Jorginho, with Gabriel Jesus potentially returning from a groin issue. If Jesus is unavailable, Leandro Trossard or new signing Raheem Sterling could lead the attack. Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu are definitely out due to injuries, while Riccardo Calafiori’s calf injury is less impactful since he was not expected to start.
Tottenham vs. Arsenal: Possible Starting XI
Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Maddison, Son; Solanke
Arsenal: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Havertz, Partey, Jorginho; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli
