The Toronto Raptors are in the process of rebuilding their roster into a championship contender. They already inked former Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes to a historic extension, and he is the cornerstone of their team. However, this team also acquired some good young talent. RJ Barrett came over in the OG Anunoby trade, and Gradey Dick bounced back after a rough start to the season. They are acquiring another young veteran hours before the second day of the draft. Davion Mitchell is headed to Toronto after a trade with the Sacramento Kings.
Toronto Raptors Acquire Davion Mitchell
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Sacramento Kings sent Davion Mitchell, Sasha Vezenkov, and the 45th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft to the Toronto Raptors. In exchange, the Kings got athletic forward Jalen McDaniels. Mitchell was the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and showed some promise early in his career. Despite some shooting deficiencies, he averaged 11.5 points per game in his rookie season. However, he became more of a defensive specialist as the years went on.
Last season, Davion Mitchell had trouble cracking the rotation. He averaged a career-low 5.3 points in just over 15 minutes per game. The Sacramento Kings saw him as expendable, especially after the team reportedly signed Malik Monk to an extension. For the Toronto Raptors, they are getting a high-upside player who can help them defend the best players in the league.
Great Move For Toronto
This is a fantastic move for the Toronto Raptors. They didn’t give up much in order to acquire two players and a draft pick. While this draft isn’t projected to be one of the best, they want to acquire as much young talent as possible. Davion Mitchell could become a staple of the rotation for years to come, or he could become an asset they use to trade for another piece. The Kings are also looking to shed some salary to stay under the luxury tax, and a team like Toronto was happy to take it on.
The Toronto Raptors are in an interesting position. They have one of the best young players in the league but seem far away from competing. However, the Eastern Conference isn’t full of many scary teams. Outside of the Boston Celtics, every team has major question marks. If the team can gel and string together some wins, they could make some noise next season.
