The Toronto Blue Jays signed future Hall of Fame Starting Pitcher Max Scherzer Thursday evening. He joined a formidable starting rotation that boasts Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt, and Bowden Francis. Toronto had one of the worst pitching staffs in the league in 2024. They were 22nd with a 4.29 ERA.
The starting pitchers all had down seasons in 2024 outside of Francis. Francis had a great end to the regular season finishing with a 1.05 ERA in August and a 2.16 ERA in September. Over his final four starts in August, he pitched 29 innings and surrendered 2 earned runs. Toronto’s pitching staff must pitch better for the team to reach its full potential. Will Toronto’s strong starting rotation on paper translate to on-field success?

Toronto’s offseason was shaping up to be a disappointing one as they missed out on Right Fielder Juan Soto, Starting Pitcher Roki Sasaki, and Starting Pitcher Corbin Burnes among others this fall/winter. The Toronto Blue Jays rebounded and signed many key players this offseason. Right Fielder Anthony Santander, Relief Pitcher Jeff Hoffman, and Second Baseman Andres Gimenez all signed with the ballclub this offseason.
The Blue Jays are looking to improve on a disappointing 2024 season that saw them miss the 2024 MLB Playoffs after qualifying in three of the previous four seasons. At the same time, Toronto’s pitching staff struggled last season, as did their offense. They were 19th in batting average, 26th in home runs, and 23rd in runs scored.
Final Thoughts
Scherzer’s signing capped off a strong overall offseason for the Toronto Blue Jays. While they improved their roster, they will face an uphill battle to compete in a loaded American League. The New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros among others will be vying for a playoff spot this season.
