The WNBA this upcoming season will be the most competitive it has ever been. Heading into this season, I think there are three to four legit title contenders. With the draft a few nights away, this list could shift. But I’m pretty sure this list will be the five teams that will be the most consistent throughout the 2025 season.
1. New York Liberty
The defending champions are far and away the best team in the league with the trio of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones back from that trophy-lifting team. It makes their case to repeat even stronger. The addition of Natasha Cloud brings another strong veteran presence after the departure of Courtney Vandersloot.
I love the Liberty’s chances for another title as they look to match the Las Vegas Aces for back-to-back titles in the decade so far. Look for Stewie and Ionescu to compete for the MVP honors this year, with the star of the next team on the list.
2. Indiana Fever
The Fever is the second-best team in the WNBA at this current moment in time. They had a strong offseason with new acquisitions to put along with the trio of Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell. The highlight of those acquisitions is elite three-point shooter Sophie Cunningham from Phoenix.
They also have Stephanie White as their new head coach after two straight semi-final appearances with the Connecticut Sun. This will make the Fever one of the most legitimate threats to the Liberty. Clark will be one of the favorites for the WNBA League MVP, and I feel she will win the award this season.
3. Las Vegas Aces
The Aces have gone through some major changes, but still have A’ja Wilson as their cornerstone player. As long as she is there on the court, they have a shot at winning a championship. The Aces still have Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray as Wilson’s running mates, even though they lost Kelsey Plum in a blockbuster trade to the Sparks, who you may see on this list later on. Also, the Aces still have Becky Hammon as their head coach. She is one of the best coaches in the W. I love the Aces to have an opportunity to make the WNBA Finals this year if their top 3 stay healthy.
4. Minnesota Lynx
The Lynx had a great Finals run to fall just short last season to the Liberty. Napheesa Collier had a great postseason overall and a great 2024. The Lynx are in an interesting spot with the opportunity to repeat their success from last year, as they have the same roster from last season. They have a motivated Collier looking for redemption after the team just fell short of capturing the title as an underdog team. I love the Lynx as that sleeper team once again this season in the Top 5 of the WNBA.
5. Los Angeles Sparks
Yes, I have the Sparks in the top 5 at the moment. With both their rookies from last year on the court, finally, after Cameron Brink missed most of the year with a Torn ACL, plus the acquisition of Plum in the offseason. The Sparks could be that breakout team of the season, like the Fever were last season, with the trio of Brink, Jackson, and Plum.
Dearica Hamby is also a nice rotation piece for this young roster as well as bringing some championship experience with Plum. I love this Sparks team to make some noise throughout the season with the potential to make a WNBA Semi-Final run.
Final Thoughts
These five teams in my mind right now are the top five at this very moment, but the draft could change things around a tad, just depends on how each team does at the draft. I feel pretty comfortable with this list at this particular moment in time, as we work toward the WNBA draft on Monday night. Total Apex Sports will have you covered with up-to-date news recaps of where players like Paige Bueckers and Hailey Van Lith will go in the draft.
