The Texas Longhorns crushed the UTSA Roadrunners in Week 3, maintaining control even after a major setback. Saturday night’s game was never truly in doubt for the Longhorns, but there were some harrowing developments early on. Quarterback Quinn Ewers was relieved by Arch Manning in the second quarter due to a strained abdomen. This would not deter the Texas Longhorns, who would claim victory in Week 3.
Texas’ Way or the Highway
1st Quarter
The game started well for the Texas Longhorns, who took an early lead. Quarterback Quinn Ewers hit Wide Receiver Isaiah Bond with a 7-yard touchdown pass. Texas makes it 7-0 with kicker Bert Auburn. UTSA Roadrunners Linebacker Owen Pewee tipped a throw meant for Longhorns Running Back Tre Wisner and the Roadrunners took possession. They made no headway, and the Texas Longhorns forced a turnover on downs.
Quinn Ewers connected with Isaiah Bond on a 4th down as Texas made their way down the field. Longhorns Running Back Jerrick Gibson added to the tally of Texas yards. Literally in the last 20 seconds of the quarter: 19-yard touchdown pass to Wide Receiver Johntay Cook II – his first of both the season and his career. It was also significant for Quinn Ewers, as his 45th career touchdown pass – tying with Vince Young. End of first quarter 14-0.
2nd Quarter
Quinn Ewers started the quarter expressing light discomfort in his throwing arm. Tight End Gunnar Helm caught massive air leaping a UTSA defensive player after a completion. Immediately after, Ewers dropped to the ground in clear distress. After heading off the field and a brief pause in the game, Texas was back in it. Backup Quarterback Arch Manning came in and immediately threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr. and it was 21-0.
UTSA would not allow the Texas Longhorns to go unanswered. 21-7. Quarterback Owen McCown of the Roadrunners passed to Running Back Robert Henry, who then ran 53 yards for the touchdown. They didn’t have long to celebrate. A 67-yard rushing touchdown was on the horizon, scored by none other than Texas Longhorn Quarterback Arch Manning. Near the end of the quarter, Manning was sacked but the tone had been set. The Roadrunners would trail the Longhorns going into the half at 28-7.
3rd Quarter
This quarter saw monster gains in passing yards. Isaiah Bond, after scoring in the 1st, decided to score under Arch Manning as well. He recorded a 51-yard touchdown pass from Arch Manning, and it was 35-7. Wide Receiver Ryan Wingo, one to watch, caught 75 yards from Manning for a touchdown. At 42-7, the Texas Longhorns had created a fairly safe lead. They would add insult to injury in the final quarter.
Also of note in this quarter: Edge Rusher Colin Simmons successfully sacked UTSA Quarterback McCown at the 37-yard line. Roadrunners Kicker Chase Allen originally made the career-high 45-yard FG attempt but failed to repeat after a whistle reset.
4th Quarter
Ryan Wingo was not done yet, completing another pass from Quarterback Arch Manning to total 127 yards this game. Not even two minutes into the quarter, Arch Manning threw to Johntay Cook II, who scored after 12 yards. It would remain 49-7 until the last two minutes of the quarter.
The Texas Longhorns’ final touchdown of the night was a 30-yard interception return. Edge Ethan Burke, a former lacrosse player, snatched an interception and headed down the field. The final score stood at 56-7 and the Texas Longhorns record is now 3-0.
Final Thoughts
The winningest coach in UTSA Roadrunners history was unfortunately not enough against this year’s Texas Longhorns. Texas took the lead early and despite UTSA efforts, held on and smacked them down. What will this mean for Texas’ spot in the rankings? Will the massive point differential be enough to unseat the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs? Next week the Texas Longhorns take on the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium. This will be the last game before the SEC contests begin.
