Anastasia Potapova Beats Karolina Pliskova To Punch Her Ticket To Madrid Open Semifinals
If you thought you had a stressful week at work, you clearly haven’t checked in on the absolute rollercoaster ride that is professional tennis. We all love a good underdog story, but what happened at the Caja Magica this week is something straight out of a Hollywood sports movie.
Anastasia Potapova just pulled off a great escape that would make Harry Houdini fiercely jealous. The world No. 56 entered the Mutua Madrid Open as a lucky loser. For the uninitiated, that means she lost in the qualifying rounds, probably started looking at flights home, and then got a miraculous tap on the shoulder to enter the main draw.
Fast forward to the quarterfinals, and she has officially become the first lucky loser in the history of the sport to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal. How did she get the job done?
Anastasia Potapova Brings the Heat Early
Going up against former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, nobody really expected the 25-year-old Austrian to completely dictate the pace. Yet, Anastasia Potapova came out swinging like she had a dinner reservation to catch. She absolutely blitzed Pliskova in the opening frame, racing to a 5-0 lead before casually serving out the first set 6-1.
When Potapova went up 5-3 in the second set, the writing seemed to be on the wall. The commentators were practically writing their post-match summaries. But as any seasoned sports fan knows, it isn’t over until the umpire actually calls it.
The Second Set Collapse We Have All Felt
At 5-3, serving for the match, the wheels didn’t just fall off the wagon; they spontaneously combusted. Anastasia Potapova had three separate match points on her racquet. Three chances to pack it up and hit the locker room. Instead, the tennis gods decided we needed more drama.
Pliskova, a two-time Grand Slam finalist who knows a thing or two about surviving on the big stage, dug her heels in. She saved the match points, broke back, and dragged the set into a tiebreak. From 4-4 in the breaker, the Czech veteran snatched three straight points to steal the set. You could almost feel the air leave Potapova’s lungs.
A Third Set Comeback For the Ages
Naturally, the momentum completely shifted. Pliskova jumped out to a commanding 3-1 lead in the deciding set. At 40-15 on Pliskova’s serve in the fifth game, a catastrophe seemed inevitable for the lucky loser. You could practically see the heartbreak setting in.
But this is where you have to tip your cap to Anastasia Potapova. She refused to fold. She dug deep, broke back, and suddenly flipped the switch. Potapova reeled off five consecutive games, completely stunning the crowd and securing a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3 victory in just under two hours.
Having already knocked out heavyweights like Jelena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina earlier in the tournament, Anastasia Potapova is officially the giant-slayer of Madrid. Next up, she faces the winner of Linda Noskova and Marta Kostyuk. If this quarterfinal was any indication, you might want to have your popcorn ready.
