Tampa Bay Buccaneers Baker Mayfield With Terrific Second Half

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield had a great second half.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback Baker Mayfield has had an excellent start to the season. Mayfield has completed 71.9% of his passes, totaled 1,164 yards in passing, and had 11 touchdowns with only two interceptions before week 6. Mayfield has a passing rating of 112 for the season with a QBR of 64.

In the past five games that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have played, Mayfield has been under pressure, making him move out of the pocket to extend plays. In the game against the Detroit Lions in week 2, Mayfield was sacked by defensive player Adian Hutchinson 4.5 times. The New Orleans Saints were ranked 11th in team defense but 26th in pass defense before Sunday’s game.

Baker Mayfield

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won over the New Orleans Saints 51-27, but it wasn’t without rough waves. Bucs Quarterback Baker Mayfield had a good start against the Saints in the first quarter. Mayfield was nine for nine in the first quarter before making his first incomplete pass to Bucs veteran receiver Mike Evans. After the first quarter, the Buccaneers were looking at a 17-3 lead over the Saints, and then tragedy struck Mayfield and the offense in the second quarter.

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would suffer one of the quarterback’s worst quarters of the season. Mayfield would throw three interceptions that would put the Saints in the perfect position to score, and that’s what the Saints did. With a short field, the Saints would score off two out of three turnovers. By the end of the first half, Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers were looking at a 27-24 Saints lead. According to Scott Smith on the team website, Mayfield had this to say about the first half:

“Obviously we had a few bad situations there with some tipped balls. The first interception was definitely the worst one. Just not a good decision. The guy had it covered up pretty well.”

Second Half Performance

In the second half, it was a different story for Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on the second drive of the second half Mayfield would find his go-to guy Bucs receiver Chris Godwin on a 55-yard touchdown off a short completion.  Mayfield would leave the second half mistake-free, mainly to the run game that finished with 277 yards in rushing. Second-year backup Running Back Sean Tucker would lead the rushing attack with 14 carries, 136 yards, and one touchdown.

Baker Mayfield ended the game by completing a pass to seven different receivers. Mayfield totaled 325 yards in passing, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. Todd Bowles, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was unpleased last week with the team’s inability to close the game against the Atlanta Falcons. After the game, Coach Bowles had this to say according to the teams’ website,

“Obviously the guys accepted coaching and making adjustments in the second half, and coming out understanding what they’ve got to do. We didn’t finish that game against Atlanta; we finished this one.”

Final Thoughts

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are now 4-2 going into week 7. Next week, in a Monday Night game at Raymond James Stadium, the Bucs will face the Baltimore Ravens, who have an excellent running offense led by Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson. Ravens won their game against the Washington Commanders 30-23 and are now 4-2 along with the Buccaneers, who are tied with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South Division. Can Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play a mistake-free, run-productive game and beat a high-powered offense in the Ravens?
