All good things must come to an end, and that’s what happened to the Tigers’ six-game winning streak on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park. The Tigers tallied eight hits in the ballgame but couldn’t get the key knocks that they needed with runners on base as they were shut out by Jack Kochanowicz and a host of Angels’ relievers.
With the loss, the Tigers drop back to one game over the .500 mark at 68-67. They sit five games behind the Twins in the race for the final Wild Card spot in the American League.
Missed Opportunities

The Tigers had plenty of chances to score in this one, they were just unable to take advantage. They put their first two men on in the third inning as Zach McKinstry roped a leadoff double into the gap in right-center and Trey Sweeney was hit by a pitch. Dillon Dingler then bounced into a rally-killing double play before Parker Meadows took a called third strike to end the inning.
The Tigers also stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, they again put their first two hitters on as Parker Meadows and Kerry Carpenter each singled. Riley Greene then flew out to deep center, moving Meadows up to third base with only one out. Rookie third baseman Jace Jung then swung at the first pitch from Kochanowicz and grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Once more they put two men on in the seventh inning against Roansy Contreras as Spencer Torkelson was hit by a pitch and Trey Sweeney added a two-out single, but Dingler again was unable to come through as he grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.
There was more traffic on the basepaths in the eighth inning as Andy Ibanez walked, Matt Vierling singled and Colt Keith worked a walk to load the bases with two outs for Torkelson. After a five-pitch battle with Angels’ closer Ben Joyce, Torkelson went down swinging as another scoring chance fizzled.
Jack Kochanowicz Dominates

The real story of the game was Angels’ rookie right-hander Jack Kochanowicz who delivered a dominant performance. He scattered just five hits across six scoreless frames and struck out four batters without issuing a base on balls. As alluded to above, he was able to make big pitches in key situations that caused a couple of major rallies for the Tigers to stall out.
Kochanowicz got six swings and misses on 73 pitches on the afternoon – four of those on his sinker – while registering a CSW (called strikes + whiffs) of 21 percent. Now 2-3 on the season, he’ll look to replicate this fine effort as he carries a 4.96 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and a 12/7 K/BB (32 2/3 innings) into a brutal matchup against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
News and Notes
Casey Mize will officially be activated from the 60-day injured list on Friday to start the Tigers’ series opener against the Red Sox at Comerica Park. Angels’ shortstop Zach Neto crushed a two-run homer for the Angels in the ballgame, his 20th of the season. With that blast he joined the 20-20 club, becoming the first infielder in Angels’ franchise history to achieve that feat.
The Tigers’ bullpen excelled once again on Thursday as Joey Wentz, Will Vest, and Sean Guenther combined to fire four scoreless frames to end the ballgame.
