Sri Lanka Knocked Out Of Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

In a disappointing turn of events, the Sri Lanka women’s cricket team has been eliminated early from the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka marking an unhappy milestone as they complete the competition without a single victory. Head coach Rumesh Ratnayake criticized the poor result as a combination of poor performance in all three disciplines. Batting, bowling, and fielding—as well as the weight of high expectations, which proved to be strong.

Sri Lanka entered the World Cup after defeating India in the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 final. And also won a bilateral series against the West Indies, England, and South Africa, all of which are among the world’s best teams. However, in this World Cup, they were only able to score more than 100 runs once. This resulted in losses against Pakistan, Australia, and India, as well as the final game against the White Ferns.

Sri Lanka Fails To Meet Expectations

Sri Lanka entered the event as a dark horse, having won the historic Asia Cup 2024 three months prior. Encouraged by the self-assurance gained after overcoming India’s remarkable 165/6 score. They stunned one of Asia’s premier cricketing nations with a performance that defied their expectations. But the group stages soon turned against them, and after suffering heartbreaking losses, they were eliminated before their last encounter.

As the World Cup comes to an end the group travels with shattered hearts but wonderful memories of the continual support they received from fans back home. Sri Lankan expatriates in the UAE turned out in great numbers, particularly in Sharjah, to express their support for the squad. The ICC even got involved, enlisting the famed Papare Band to celebrate the team’s victories. Whether it was a wicket, a fielding stop, or a well-hit single.

Captain Athapaththu would be personally upset with her performance in the competition. The 34-year-old is the game’s fifth-highest all-rounder and is in the top 10 for batting alone. And was one of the world’s best players heading into the World Cup. She was effective with the ball, but it took the Sri Lanka captain until her final match to shine with the bat. She struck a brilliant 35 against the White Ferns.

Athapaththu has not scored more than 100 runs in any of their three innings, regardless of whether they bat first or chase. In addition, their aggregate performance closely mirrors that of their leader. Chamari Athapaththu has been removed in single digits in each inning, totaling 10 runs in the tournament so far. This is her lowest-ever World Cup performance, in comparison to the two prior competitions in South Africa and Australia, where she scored over 100 runs each.

Summing Up

After a humiliating loss to New Zealand on October 12 (Saturday), Sri Lanka withdrew from the 2024 World T20WC without winning a single match. Rumesh Rathnayake, the head coach of Sri Lanka, stated that the team was under pressure to perform well, which is why their performances fell short of expectations. In actuality, they were defeated in every match throughout this campaign. As of right now, Sri Lanka is the first team to announce its departure from the tournament.
