Tottenham’s season hasn’t been much better, in fact worse. Just one point behind United in 16th, they’ve also been in freefall. Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs had a solid start to the season, but injuries and form derailed them. Still, they’ve put together a strong European campaign, with a tidy 2–0 win over Bodø/Glimt in the semis, showing a real fight in this team.

A win in Dublin would mark their first major trophy in 17 years. That alone would mean everything to Spurs fans who’ve lived through countless near-misses over almost two decades. Postecoglou knows this can’t be the end of the journey. He’s hinted that even winning this final shouldn’t be the only metric for judging long-term success.

And he’s not wrong. Managers like Erik ten Hag, Roberto Di Matteo, and even Avram Grant all lifted major trophies only to be sacked afterward. Postecoglou’s challenge is bigger than just winning one match; it’s about proving that his high-pressing, fearless football can actually work long-term in North London.

This isn’t a David vs. Goliath situation; however, this season says otherwise. Spurs are unbeaten in their last three games against United in all competitions, having done the double in the Premier League and winning in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals as well. On paper, Spurs have the upper hand over the Red Devils this season, and this will be the fourth time the two clubs face off.  United have historically had the upper hand, with 24 home wins against the Spurs in the Premier League. But that aura of invincibility is long gone. This time, it’s wide open.

Wouldn’t it be sweet for Spurs to lift a trophy despite finishing 16th in the league, especially while their rivals Arsenal sit second but end the season trophyless for the fifth year in a row? It’s what their fans dream of. 

Losing? Disappointing, yes, but perhaps not as devastating as it will be for the Red Devils. The rebuild continues either way. For United, though, it’s different. Another year outside Europe’s elite, and the rot spreads deeper. Another failure makes more questions about Amorim, player futures, and the entire club structure unavoidable. In many ways, the answer to “who has more to lose?” tells you everything about where these two clubs currently stand. One desperately trying to claw back its lost glory.
