Seattle Seahawks Sign Pro Bowl Safety To 3-Year Extension

Seattle Seahawks pass rush needs to be better.

The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up for a bounce-back year in 2024. Injuries derailed their 2023 season as they finished behind the Rams and 49ers. Long-time head coach Pete Carroll has moved on, and former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald takes the reigns. He is looking to improve a defense that has talent, especially in the secondary. One of those pieces will be around for a while as safety Julian Love has signed a three-year extension with the team.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on X that the Seattle Seahawks and Julian Love have agreed to a three-year, $36 million extension. Love was recently ranked 95th in the NFL’s annual Top 100 Players. Seattle released Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs back in March to create the cap space, and they are starting to use it. The 26-year-old safety still has one year left on his current deal, so he will be in Seattle for at least the next four seasons.

Julian Love was drafted out of Notre Dame by the New York Giants. He didn’t get a second contract from the team and instead signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Seahawks. He has blossomed into one of the most underrated safeties in football. Last season, he racked up 123 totals tackles, 10 passes defended and four interceptions which earned him a Pro Bowl nod.

2024 Outlook

Head coach Mike Macdonald is going to have some fun with this secondary. Devon Witherspoon had a promising rookie season and now has a premier defensive mind coaching him. Love should be even more excited. Macdonald got to coach another Notre Dame safety in Kyle Hamilton, and knew how to put him in positions to make plays. Overall, the Seahawks have a solid roster. The issue is they are in one of the toughest divisions in the NFC.

Both the Rams and 49ers are looking to get back to the playoffs, and the Cardinals have improved this offseason. The division games will be tough, and while the team has lots of talent, it will take near-perfect execution to beat the quality teams. While there are some division battles in the NFC that aren’t intriguing, the NFC West should offer fans a lot of entertainment throughout the year.

GM John Schneider is using his cap space. It will be interesting to see if he is done or if some of the other young players on this team get extensions over the next few weeks.
