Kevin Kiermaier Announces Retirement From MLB

Kevin Kiermaier announced that 2024 will be his last season in Major League Baseball.

Toronto Blue Jays Center Fielder Kevin Kiermaier announced that the 2024 season would be his last in Major League Baseball. He announced his decision before tonight’s game at home against the Tampa Bay Rays. He has been part of an outfield platoon this season with the Toronto Blue Jays. In 76 games played, he is hitting a career-worst .195 with four home runs and 18 RBI. Will Kevin Kiermaier be able to end his Major League career on a high note?

Kevin Kiermaier Career Summary

Kiermaier made his debut in 2014 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He spent the first nine seasons of his career in the “Sunshine State” before signing before the 2023 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. Kevin Kiermaier has been one of the best fielders in Major League Baseball during his career. He is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner(2015, 2016, 2019, 2023). He also won the Platinum Glove in 2015 as a member of the Rays. The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award is a fan-voted award that recognizes the best defensive baseball player in each league.

He is a career .247 hitter with 94 home runs and 370 RBI. Kevin Kiermaier has a career average of .229 in the MLB Playoffs. Kiermaier was placed on waivers before the 2024 MLB All-Star Game but went unclaimed. He remains a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. He is a veteran piece that may be on the move before next week’s MLB Trade Deadline.

How Will Kiermaier’s Career End?

Unless the veteran latches on with a contender for the final 60 games of the regular season, his MLB career will end with him missing the playoffs. Toronto(45-55) is in last place in the American League East and a whopping 10 games back of the third and final American League Wild Card spot. Kiermaier is making the right decision to hang up the cleats at the end of the 2024 regular season as he is not the player he once was. He is no longer an everyday player in the field, his strong suit, and has struggled greatly at the plate in 2024.

Regardless of how Kiermaier’s MLB career ends, he was a player who had a solid career and was considered one of the best fielders of his era. Kiermaier will look to end his 11-year career on a high note and leave baseball fans with positive memories of a respected ballplayer.
