Scottie Scheffler: Charges Dropped From PGA Championship Arrest

PGA Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is the hottest name in golf right now, and it isn’t just because of his play on the course. Before the second round of the PGA Championship, he was arrested due to a traffic incident. While he was released and able to continue the tournament, the charges against him still had to be dealt with. It was announced today by Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell that they are dropping the charges against the world’s number-one golfer.

The arrest happened on May 17 by Detective Bryan Gillis, who alleged Scottie Scheffler accelerated his vehicle and dragged the officer to the ground. Gillis spent time in the hospital treating abrasions on his arms and legs. Scheffler’s attorney made it clear he would be pleading not guilty, and it looks like the lack of evidence is causing the case to be dropped. Here is the statement from O’Connell.

“Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler. Mr. Scheffler’s characterization that this was a ‘big misunderstanding’ is corroborated by the evidence. The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective [Bryan] Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler. However, Mr. Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.”

One of the key pieces of evidence missing is bodycam footage, as Gillis did not activate his body cam, which is something he has reportedly been disciplined for. The evidence that was there showed no crime. This ends one of the weirdest sagas to hit the golfing world.

Scottie Scheffler can get back to golf. Despite the drama surrounding the PGA Championship, he finished tied for eighth in the major championship. He is scheduled to be at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday next week. From there, the US Open is on the horizon. Scottie Scheffler has proven he will always be in the mix for every tournament, no matter what is happening around him.

Scottie Scheffler can now put this situation behind him. Had this lingered for a while, it may have affected his game. He can now focus on winning more tournaments and securing his legacy in the golf world.
