BREAKING: San Jose Sharks Trade for Top Goalie Prospect

San Jose Sharks

In a stunner, the San Jose Sharks have acquired the top goalie prospect in a trade with the Nashville Predators. Yaroslav Askarov is heading to San Jose.

The full terms of the deal are quite favorable to both teams. San Jose is getting Askarov, Nolan Burke, and a 2025 third-round pick(acquired from Colorado). Nashville is getting former first-round pick David Edstrom, a 2025 first-round pick(acquired from Vegas), and goalie Magnus Chrona.

Both Teams Won The Trade

In the business of making trades, it’s very difficult for both teams to win a deal. However, this appears to be a rare instance where it’s hard to signal a winner early. We will actually have to wait to see how things play out on the ice to declare a winner. Askarov had demanded a trade out of Nashville after the team signed cornerstone goalie Juuse Saros to a massive eight-year extension.

Edstrom and the Vegas first-round pick had been sent to San Jose in the Tomas Hertl trade. For the second time in less than a year, Edstrom and the 2025 first is on the move. The first has the condition attached to it that if Vegas’ first finishes in the top 10 picks, the Sharks can hold onto it and instead give up their first-round pick instead.

San Jose Sharks Now Set For Future

With this trade, San Jose Sharks General Manager Mike Grier has further set the team up greatly in its rebuild. They had drafted Macklin Celebrini first overall in the 2024 NHL Draft. Will Smith was their first-round pick in 2023 and is expected to form the nucleus of a great young core with Celebrini and William Eklund.

With Sam Dickinson also added in the first round of this year’s draft, the Sharks are arguably the most dangerous young team in the NHL. Quentin Musty, Shakir Mukamadulin, and Henry Thrun are also expected to help this team take strides in the future. 2023-24 might have been rock bottom, but the San Jose Sharks are on the ascent back to playoff contention.

Nashville Is Set For Playoff Push

No team looks more dangerous going into this season than the Predators. Following this trade with the San Jose Sharks, they continue to add to their crown as “off-season champions” following their recent playoff run. They added several key talents like Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei. It became apparent that Askarov needed to find a new home despite being the goaltender of the future after the Saros extension.

While the San Jose Sharks are looking to continue their rebuild, the championship window is officially open in “Smashville.” The Predators will look to capitalize after becoming the infamous “offseason champions.” Edstrom might not be an instant contributor, but he will be part of a very bright future for Nashville.
