Creed Humphrey, the starting center for the Kansas City Chiefs now in his fourth year of his NFL career, agreed to a record-breaking four-year deal worth $72 million, with $50 million guaranteed, on Thursday, August 22. This record-breaking deal which extends Humphrey through the 2028 season has now made him the highest-paid center in NFL history, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The former University of Oklahoma Sooner and a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has earned this new deal with his dominant play on the field as the centerpiece of a championship-caliber offensive line.
How did Creed Humphrey get Here?
Since entering the NFL, Humphrey has not missed a single game, which currently includes 51 regular season and 10 playoff games. Not only has Humphrey, a two-time Pro Bowler, proven his durability but he’s also produced at a high level while on the field.
He currently ranks as the highest center in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus and in 2023, he allowed only 16 pressures and finished last season with a 78.2 overall grade, ranking seventh at his position. He’s also been ranked as the “No. 1 center heading into 2024” according to CBS Sports. This means the Chiefs now have their centerpiece locked up on their offensive line, as they look to continue making more history as a franchise.
What’s Next for C Chiefs?
This deal was able to get done thanks to Patrick Mahomes restructuring his 10-year deal, which gave the Chiefs salary cap flexibility to make this move. Now that they have locked up Humphrey, a main priority for the front office, they will look to try and lock up guard Trey Smith and linebacker Nick Bolton.
However, due to current financial restraints on the Chiefs, getting these deals done will be much more difficult. On top of that, it’s arguable that despite Smith’s talent and performance on the field, he might not even be the best guard on his team—which could be Joe Thuney. As for Bolton, who is one of the core defensive pieces for the Chiefs and is an integral part of Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, he has produced in both regular season and postseason play, warranting a new contract. But it will all come down to negotiations and if both players and their representatives can agree on the right numbers with the Chiefs’ front office.
Final Thoughts
Now with the Chiefs securing their big three of Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Humphrey on the offensive side of the ball, the team also took care of re-signing their core coaching staff and general manager this off-season. The team is in a prime position to focus fully on their play on the field as they aim for their fourth Super Bowl championship and fourth title in the last five years.
