The San Francisco 49ers acquired more competition at running back by signing Matt Breida to compete in the backup role behind Christian McCaffrey. The veteran rusher returns to the team that drafted him eight seasons ago and will likely thrive in Head Coach Kyle Shanahan’s rushing system with his offensive scheme. This is bad news for fourth-round rookie Isaac Guerendo, who is dealing with a hamstring injury that he suffered in practice.
San Francisco 49ers Add A Familiar Face
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Super Bowl runner-up added the journeyman to improve their backfield depth. When he was with the 49ers, Breida rushed for 1,902 yards on the ground in his first three seasons in San Francisco.
The veteran spent the last two years with the New York Giants as the backup to Saquon Barkley, who is now on the Philadelphia Eagles. Breida was with the Miami Dolphins in 2020 before joining the Buffalo Bills in 2021 when Brian Daboll was their offensive coordinator.
Competition At Backup Running Back Is Fierce
Now back with Kyle Shanahan, Breida will compete with the likes of Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason behind superstar Christian McCaffrey. 26-year-old Mitchell and 25-year-old Mason were the two healthy running backs competing for the backup job in training camp so far, but that dynamic will change with the new signing.
The speedster fits perfectly with their scheme, making the three-man race to make the roster interesting. This might signal the rookie Guerendo’s injury could be worse than originally stated. If Matt Breida has enough in the tank, he could beat out the other backs behind McCaffrey on the San Francisco 49ers.
