Wembanyama is putting together one of the best rookie seasons in league history for a Spurs team (11-44) that is downright bad. The San Antonio Spurs are looking to build for the future, and Wembanyama will be a building block for the team for years to come.
The big man is on track to become the second player in the last 51 years – since blocked shots were first recorded – and the first since Manute Bol in 1985-86 to lead the league in blocks per game as a rookie. Wembanyama enters the All-Star Break averaging 3.2 blocks per game. This puts him nearly half a block per game ahead of second-place Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz.
Wembanyama is averaging 20.5 points and 1o rebounds in his rookie campaign.
Will San Antonio Spurs Wembanyama Be Able To Compete In These Events?
Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs has not been a successful three-point shooter this season. He is only 20 years of age though and has ample time to improve that part of his game. He is shooting 32% from deep this season, 155th out of 164 qualified shooters. Big men including the Milwaukee Bucks Brook Lopez and Miami Heat’s Kevin Love have completely reshaped their offensive games to include three-point shooting. Wembanyama will need to follow this blueprint to stand a semblance of a chance to compete in the three-point contest.
The rookie has not shown the creativity necessary to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Most of Wembanyama’s in-game dunks have been relatively basic. Wembanyama is the tallest player in the league and does not need great creativity to score in the paint.
San Antonio Spurs Wembanyama is one of the most physically gifted players in the league, and if he sets his mind to it, will be able to compete in both the NBA Slam Dunk Contest and Three-Point Contest in a short time.
