Sacramento Kings 1 vs. Charlotte Hornets Summer League Preview | July 9, 2024

On the third day of Summer League action for the Golden 1 Center California Classic, it will be a clash between the Sacramento Kings 1 vs. the Charlotte Hornets. Both teams currently sit at 2-0, so expect a great game.

The King’s first team won their last game against the San Antonio Spurs 85-59. Boogie Ellis was in tip-top shape this game, scoring 17 points, two rebounds, one assist, and a steal. Keon Ellis also played well with 13 points and four rebounds. Lastly, Jo Lual-Acuil came off the bench with 13 points, eight rebounds, and a block.

Charlotte also had a fantastic game, winning against Team China 93-62. Bryce McGowens was the big ticket of the game, scoring 20 points. Following him was a 14-point showing from Jake Stephens. Stephens also had a block and four rebounds. Finally, it was a group effort from the rest of the roster to get them the win.

Summer League Team Review

When taking a look at the starting five, one player who has been doing well is Drew Timme. He was undrafted in 2023 but signed a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks G League team, the Wisconsin Herd. In his 12 games played, he averaged 12.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. In his latest California Classic game, he cashed in six points and grabbed seven boards.

Mason Jones has also been doing well this Summer League. He started his last game and finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Jones has made appearances on the King’s NBA roster, but he hasn’t had a breakthrough yet. However, expect him to continue to perform well this summer.

It’s been a great Classic so far for these Hornets players. They have a consistent group that is contributing through the whole game. A majority of their bench scored last game, and the starters were on top of things. More should come from Zavier Simpson in the next game. He played 11 games for the Memphis Grizzlies this season, averaging 7.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. He only had eight points in his last showing, but he contributed in defense and in great ball movement.

Jake Stephens is playing very consistently right now. He once again had 14 points, and now one should expect that he’ll continue to score in this way. He looks comfortable on the court and is playing with confidence. I wouldn’t be surprised if Stephens is at 14+ again for points against Sacramento.

Possible Breakout Players of the Game

As mentioned Mason Jones played well last game, but I think he’ll play even better on July 9th. He’s becoming more active with the ball and having a 13+ scoring night is possible. He was 4-8 in field goal range and 2-3 from three. I’d like to see Jones shoot a few more shots and get these points up. He’s a good shooter and with 28 minutes of play he should’ve done more damage in the category.

Leaky Black has played alright, but could do much better in the next California Classic game. He was 3-6 from the field and 1-4 from three. If he can get hot from three, things could get interested. However, Black wasn’t the best three-point shooter in college. Instead he should focus his game on the midrange. Here he has the chance of getting a decent amount of points. He’s also 6’6″ and 209 pounds of muscle. It’s time for him to start digging into the paint and driving the ball.
