In the NBA community, Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama are well known. These two powerhouse players have multiple awards: three-time NBA Rookie of the Month, six All-Defensive Team members, four All-NBA Players, three NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and two NBA Player of the Week.
Gobert is a Seasoned player, while Victor is a rookie of extraordinary skill, playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs. These two players will be changing their team jerseys this year for Olympic prowess but not for Team USA.
Rudy Gobert and Wembanyama the Twin Eiffel Towers
Rudy Gobert stands at 7’1, and Wembanyama 7’4″, making these two towers an almost impossible wall for any player to make a shot over. Gobert is an experienced Olympian who helped win a silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 games. He isn’t just a brick wall on the court. Gobert also adds to the Timberwolves by averaging 2.1 blocks, 0.6 steals, 9.2 defensive rebounds, and 1.6 deflections per game.
Now, Rudy Gobert is making a deep run in the playoffs with his team. They’ve just swept the Phoenix Suns, and he was a major part of that success. He will be looking to translate this success onto the global stage. He and Wembanyama might make an unbeatable duo if they are used properly by the French coaching staff.
A Dominant Season for the French Rookie
Victor Wembanyama has also been adding to his team with his extraordinary ability as one of the finalists for Rookie of the Year. In his season debut, he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 blocks a game.
He is a great rim protector. He led the league in blocks and came in eighth for rebounds. With him standing alongside Rudy Gobert, they will be a strong defensive core. He is also very capable of scoring from the field and past the arch.
Wembanyama did not make the playoffs this season. However, there was a clear shift in the way this Spurs team started playing by the end of the season. Running the offense through him helped them start winning games. Look for this Olympic team to do the same thing. Get the ball to Wembanyama and let him get to work.
USA Dream Team vs. French Towers of Power
Team USA has announced its roster for this Olympic Dream Team, and as we close on Paris’s opening ceremony, they will have their hands full on how to deal with these two French giants. These twin Eiffel Towers may prove more than difficult for any team to work around. Centers Bam Adebayo, Joel Embiid, and Anthony Davis will have to play hard and fight through these two players to propel their team over them.
Team USA has won seven consecutive gold medals and has a 63-0 record since the 1972 Summer Olympics. They are the team to beat and have always played dominant and aggressive basketball. It will take a lot to get past the super team they’ve built. There has never been a better chance for France and Rudy Gobert to have a new Maginot Line on the Court.
