The Washington Wizards have had a very tough season this year. One could say they truly have hit rock bottom. They currently have the worst record in the Eastern Conference and in the whole league. These are three spots below where they were last season. It’s clear that this team is due for a massive rebuild.
There was hope that bringing Jordan Poole over from Golden State would help boost their team. However, the duo of Poole and Kuzma has yet to work out. Now the young guard, who already has a ring from his previous team, is coming off the bench. The whole roster has no drive to win. There really is no hope this season for Washington.
But what can this team do next year to keep them from hitting the bottom again?
Washington Wizards Sink With Jordan Poole Pickup
After spending 4 seasons with the Golden State Warriors Jordan Poole was traded to the Washington Wizards for Chris Paul. At the beginning of the season, this seemed to be a solid deal for Washington. They were gaining a young guard who knew what it was like to win a ring. However, it didn’t turn out the way they thought it would. Poole has had some stellar performances for the team, but he also has games where he looks checked out and lost. He is averaging 16.5 points per game, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. It seems like the move to Washington, a noncontending team, has caused Poole’s playing ability and even his want to be on the court to dip. As of recently his stint as a bench player has seemingly put more of a pep in his step but it still isn’t consistent.
The Blow the Whole Thing Up Washington Wizards Strategy
The Washington Wizards need to find a way to climb out of the hole they have dug. One strategy is blowing the whole thing up and rebuilding. The problem is the Wizards have done this already. They got rid of Bradley Beal, their 11-season veteran and All-Star, for Chris Paul and Landry Shamet. Paul would later be sent to Golden State for Jordan Poole. They also shipped Kristaps Porzingis to Boston for Tyus Jones, a late pick, Danilo Gallinari, and Mike Muscala. Both big men are no longer with the team. Though Beal struggled with injuries he was still having strong games for the Wizards and Porzingis was playing some of the best basketball in his career. They’ve already blown everything up.
For the Washington Wizards to do this strategy once again they would most likely have to move on from their star guard Kyle Kuzma. He has been a constant for the team since being acquired from the Lakers but has yet to help the Wizards get far up the table. Kuzma is averaging 22.5 points per game and is now 28 years old. He is a valuable piece for the Wizards, but he has yet to get the job done with stars such as Beal and Porzingis. This is his third opportunity to work with a high-caliber player, Jordan Poole and it isn’t working out.
Washington Wizards: It’s Only Up From Here
It is impossible for the Washington Wizards to fall lower in the standings. The only place they can go from here is up. With their season almost over the process of rebuilding should start now. The front office should figure out what they could get from trading Kuzma or how to strengthen their lackluster bench. If this isn’t something they are capable of it is safe to say the Washington Wizards will be seen in the bottom 3 again next season.
