In a somewhat anticlimactic move, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Wide Receiver Mike Williams, giving up a fifth-round pick to the New York Jets. For a receiver-poor team like Pittsburgh, any upgrade is a positive, but the acquisition still leaves room for more improvement.

Outside of the standout George Pickens, the Pittsburgh Steelers have earned a 6-2 record based on the strength of the defense and rushing attack. With veteran Quarterback Russell Wilson under center, having more passing options is necessary for continuing the team’s 2024 success. Williams isn’t a fancy pick, nor is he someone who appears to move the needle much. He is someone though who should be able to slip into the WR2 spot if the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t make another move.
Williams has seen a steady decline in both usage and production since his 2021 season (1,146 yards and nine touchdowns), but 249 yards in 2023 and a meager 166 yards receiving in 2024 made him expendable. On an offense like Pittsburgh’s, the lowest-paid unit in the entire NFL, getting a player like Williams is a minor step forward. If this ends up being the sole move the Pittsburgh Steelers make, then there is a ton of pressure on Williams to overachieve and even more on Arthur Smith to make a low-end receiving room produce every week.
Final Thoughts
The former Jets receiver joins a position group that has struggled to get separation. That’s why two of the top four receiving targets on the team are a tight end and running back, respectively. Considering how public Pittsburgh’s receiving woes have been, especially with the Brandon Aiyuk situation falling flat, this could be the best option the Pittsburgh Steelers had. Omar Khan is sure to remain on the phone right up until the 4 pm EST deadline, but if desperation is in the air it might not result in anything better than what Williams just brought the team.
